Although I spent most of my career in Lincolnshire, I’m now semi-retired and living in SW France. I have a large plot of land in an area which is renowned for its ‘lost’ Roman villages and the meadow concerned has a spring and many fascinating humps and hollows which suggest that it has been inhabited for over 2000 years; we have found evidence of 4th century burials. I want to explore this are as responsibly as I can, but am worried that the soil is very stony. When the farmers plough nearby fields, they usually walk them carefully in advance and make collections of great slabs of ?limestone which would otherwise ruin their machinery and seem to lie and work their way up from say 50cm under the surface. I’m completely new to detecting and would really value your advice, if I’ve given you enough info to go on. I suppose I’m looking for something which detects as much as possible as deep as possible! Budget is a matter of negotiation between me and Santa Claus, whose arm I am prepared to break to get a good machine.
