Herron was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and educated at Balliol College, Oxford, where he earned a degree in English. [1] [2] [3] Career [ edit ] Location of the fictional Slough House (Aldersgate Street, London) If you enjoyed “Slow Horses”, then there will be a lot here for you to enjoy. I preferred the first book a bit more, if only because it sets the tone, and I found it to be a bit more humorous than this second book. Series are always a tough read for me, because I’ll read the first book, love it, and then want to dive right into the second. Oftentimes, the second book is good, but it is ALWAYS difficult to recapture the elements that draw you in to that first book. There’s a sameness that can wear thin with too much of a good thing, unless an author is good enough to build upon the things that you love while showing you something new. Slow Horses continues to impress as a modern-world-set variant on the classic Michael Caine / Harry Palmer tales of old, with Dead Lions very much the Funeral in Berlin to the first season's Ipcress File, seeing Gary Oldman's old dog uncover some seemingly-long buried Russian sleepers and an old adversary who still holds a grudge against him. The scale isn't exactly world-shaking, but it nonetheless has its moments and has certainly built itself up as a series to watch, with the extensive number of novels to adapt from suggesting it really has legs should Apple continue to invest in it.

River has to steal something out of the Park to save a life. Lamb realizes a stranger game is afoot. Long-buried Cold War secrets emerge which threaten to bring carnage to the streets of London. When a liaison with Russian villains takes a fatal turn, our hapless heroes must overcome their individual failings and raise their spy game in a race to prevent a catastrophic incident.A second anti-terrorist workout for the sorely tried denizens of Finsbury’s Slough House ( Slow Horses, 2010). Taverner meets with Lamb and reveals Ahmed is the nephew of the second-in-command of Pakistani Military Intelligence. His kidnapping and intended rescue is an unsanctioned false-flag operation masterminded by Taverner herself to potentially increase cooperation with Pakistan as well as neutralise and intimidate the far-right. She claims to have an operative embedded with the Sons of Albion who organised the kidnapping but will also facilitate the rescue. It is also revealed that Standish narrowly escaped a treason charge through her links with Partner and his death.

For a moment Lamb has the uncomfortable sensation that this mouse is staring into a past he has tried to bury, or peering into a future he’d sooner forget. And then he blinks, and the mouse is nowhere, if it was ever there at all. ‘What this place needs is a cat,’ grumbles Lamb, but there’s no one there to hear him.”Lamb – I do feel I have to include him – there is much I dislike about him but he is also engaging and loyal when his team are threatened (by anyone other than himself) and yes he does, as The Guardian interview with Herron suggests, bear echoes of Falstaff, unlikeable but compelling in a horrible way.
