Also, in this book, we got Akos’ sister, Cisi’s perspective as well as Akos and Cyra and I think that was an incredibly poor choice. Cisi is a super underdeveloped character and literally nothing interesting happened in her chapters, so every time I got to one of them, I nearly fell asleep. Also, she got so many chapters and for what?! That was just super off putting 😒 there are the superficial physical differences - cyra has darker skin, is much taller and … sturdier than tris, and by the end of the book, something happens that alters her appearance in a way that i personally think is SO FREAKING COOL, and also ghastly. but more importantly, her personality is not just warming up the tris leftovers. they are both proactive and badass with the fighting skills without getting too sentimental when violence needs doing, but cyra has had a much harder path dealt to her than tris, and it has toughened her worldview, giving her more depth and darkness than tris ever had. The Fates Divide is the sequel to Carve the Mark, and takes place at most a day or two after that one’s ending. When the tensions between different countries escalate to full-out war, Cyra and Akos have to try and restore peace to their planet. Just like the first book, it’s filled with political intrigue, fantasy and sci-fi elements and romance- but unlike Carve the Mark, it executes that all in a really sloppy way 😬

Ryzek chooses a different destination than the fates saw. He heads for a planet that he thinks will be the best partnership for the Shotet. It is rumored that they have secret weapons. I didn't have a problem with it in this case - it all played into the theme of "the fates", the invisible hand moving the pieces across the chess board.

The chancellor Isae Benesit (Ori’s twin) arrives. Her gift is that she can determine if someone is telling the truth if she touches them. As always, her currentgift doesn’t work on Akos. She wants to know if anything was revealed about Ori to Ryzek. He doesn’t think so, but he can’t remember for sure. The Fates Divide is a richly imagined tale of hope and resilience told in four stunning perspectives.

In their galaxy, there is a force called the current, which flows through every living being, and can be seen visibly as the "currentstream," manifesting as lights wrapped around the planets. Originally, the current was seen as holy and sacred to the people of the planets; though still revered by many, fewer and fewer carry on their worship of the current. Every person in the galaxy has a currentgift, which is a certain talent unique to them; their currentgift typically develops during puberty or times of dire need/extreme emotion. but i am SO SO pleased that roth has diverged (ho-HO!) from that path and gone off in a whole new direction with this book (which is apparently the first part of a duology). i do love an author with more than one idea in their head. Roth skillfully weaves the careful world-building and intricate web of characters that distinguished Divergent, with settings that are rich with color, ripe for a cinematographer. Roth fans will cheer this new novel with its power to absorb the reader. Readers will be anxiously awaiting the sequel."--Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) (starred review)So you can imagine how much it hurts for me to say that The Fates Divide was an extremely, unbelievably, ohgoddingly, painful read. It just....I don’t know what happened to me. Is it even me? My tastes might have changed after reading all kinds of books after Carve The Mark. I know for one The Raven Cycle series had recently changed me forever, that’s probably it, right?? After their capture and recruitment, Elijeh is tortured into forcing his currentgift to manifest. Upon it manifesting, Ryzek uses his currentgift to switch memories with Elijeh, hoping to gain Elijeh's ability to see into the future in the process; he theorizes that one's currentgift is part of who they are, and that by taking on aspects of Elijeh, he can gain Elijeh's currentgift. Elijeh begins to show similar traits to Ryzek and is always by his side as his ever-present adviser. Akos refuses to lose hope, however, and is determined to keep his promise to his father to bring Elijeh home.

She tells him she doesn’t know how to describe the two of them. He uses a Shotet word meaning a friend so close you would die for them and a Thuvhesit word for beloved. Non posso parlare molto della trama, ma la storia riprende più o meno nel momento in cui si interrompe il volume precedente. The people of Shotet live mostly in poverty, while their leader and higher class hoard all imports and dole them out selectively. The people of Shotet are very skilled in combat, in contrast to the Thuvhesit, who only possess a meager army of trained soldiers. At the time the story takes place, the Shotet are governed by the Noavek family, who are known for having a history of killing siblings and other family members, and the Shotet slowly go to ruin under their governing. I would love this to become a movie. Honestly, I think this could be turned into a great movie adaptation!

Akos asks Cyra if she would ever leave with him if he ever gets his hands on Eijeh. She would if Ryzek was dead.

I enjoyed The Fates Divide more than the first one. This was a good continuation of the story. I felt immersed into it right away - Veronica Roth didn't take long to get right to business. The writing style by the author is simply fantastic and extremely coherent, laced tightly with drama and action. The twists in this book are absolutely unforeseeable and will leave the readers anticipating till the climax to find out what happens next. The dialogues are okay, not that great, what mattered here is the myriad perspectives of the four main and important characters, and through their voices, the readers get to contemplate with the story line. The actions scenes are penned very strikingly, that give an adrenaline-rushing feel to those scenes. The world was a little much. I am not going to lie. I was overwhelmed with the vastness of the intergalactic world Roth created. There was just too much of it. The language she tried to throw in there was inconsistent and unnecessary, but the characters and their interactions made Carve the Mark all that it was to me.The Shotet mark their arms with kill marks. Cyra tells him contrary to what he might’ve heard from other Shotet, they are signs of loss (not murder). The two continue to train each other. It’s taking a little while for each of them to learn.
