Description

When you first start walking with the Canny Collar and getting your dog used to wearing it, you will have to pay attention to him during the first few minutes to make sure he is keeping his head upright, that the Canny Collar is loose around the mouth area and that the leash is long enough to be loose but short enough so that the nose band does not move towards the front of his nose and fall off. Recommended by dog trainers, Guide Dogs, training schools, rescue shelters and veterinarians worldwide Bring the D rings together to meet underneath his chin and use one or two of the optional carabiner clips to secure the D rings together. Never fasten your lead to the carabiners. The innovative 'behind-the-head' design makes it easy to fit and simple to use. This means that it will also not ride up into your dog’s eyes nor yank her head to one side. The ultimate step when fitting your Canny Collar can typically be overlooked. As you pull the slip line from underneath your dog’s chin to position it over his nostril, it is important to pull it by way of the yellow plastic guider, to allow this to then take a seat below your dog’s chin for the duration of a stroll. This also ensures the slip line is not going to come off your dog’s nose.

Your lead attaches to the D rings on the slip line. This works independently of the collar, giving you a direct connection to your dog’s ‘steering’. There is no need to remove the Canny Collar when you let your dog off lead. Simply use the carabiner clips included with each collar to fasten the slip line webbing under your dog’s chin by first crossing the ends behind her head as per the fitting and using instructions. A challenge that every Dog Shelter has is getting each dog the walks that they need while keeping their volunteers safe. This is no different for the GTHS and a tool that has helped tremendously with that is the Canny Collar. When choosing a collar to stop your dog pulling on leash, every brand will claim to be ‘the best’. But there is no 'one fits all' solution. Can be used in both ‘training collar mode’ and ‘regular collar mode’ by easily dropping the slip line (nose band) off your dog's nose as needed. This way, you can train your dog to eventually walk on a regular collar and lead. For persistent pullers and rescue dogs whose history is unknown, it can be an invaluable tool. It is sometimes the difference between whether a rescue dog is returned to a shelter or not.

At first, some dogs may dislike the feel of having a head collar on their nose. For these dogs, it’s important to gradually condition them to wearing it. As soon as in this position, begin your stroll and relax your arm, allowing the Canny Collar to do any corrective work and which means that you may reward your dog vocally when he’s walking by your side. After a few times of beginning the walk this way, your dog should start to become accustomed to you being in control of the walk and keep his head upright with no pulling. It doesn’t mean that he can’t stop and sniff etc, the only difference is that this happens when you decide and not your dog. The key to walking your dog well on a lead is consistency and if we are trying to gain your dog’s respect for your authority when lead training, he will get mixed messages if we are trying to control one aspect of the walk (the pulling) but allowing him to do the other things that often impede a pleasurable walk. Once your dog is walking, instantly lower the lead to release the pressure on the Canny Collar (you should also let him have some more lead here) and give him plenty of vocal praise whilst keeping walking. He needs to know that at some point in the walk, the pressure will be released; otherwise he may just continue to pull against it. When you first start walking with the Canny Collar and getting your dog used to wearing it, you will have to pay attention to him during the first few minutes to make sure he is keeping his head upright, that the Canny Collar is loose around the mouth area and that the lead is long enough to be loose but short enough so that the nose band does not move towards the front of his nose and fall off.A head collar is not a device that can help with more serious behavioral issues encountered when walking your dog" This means the Canny Collar is loose and comfortable on your dog but that there is not enough nose band for it to move towards the end of your dog’s nose and fall off the end. We don’t recommend using a flexi lead with the Canny Collar for precisely this reason as it allows too much lead with the possibility that the nose band will then come off the nose. Whilst the Canny Collar is designed to enable your dog to stroll well on a free lead, an excessive amount of lead may permit the slip line to return off your dog’s nose even as strolling. There is a just-right rationalization here to find out how to restrict this.

These first couple of minutes are an opportunity to connect with your dog and be focused on training him to walk well. The first five or ten minutes are the most important part of the walk for both of you and if you can get your dog walking well in this time, the rest of the walk will be a breeze.Put the Canny Collar on and go for a walk immediately. Keep your leash short but loose when walking and aim to have your dog in the 'heel' position. Using a shorter training lead will make this easier, around 4 ft length is ideal. Give him plenty of vocal praise when he begins walking well. You should continue walking so that your dog focuses on the walk rather than on the Canny Collar, lifting your leash when he paws at it and verbally encouraging him to follow you.

The Canny Collar fastens behind the head rather than under the chin. The immediate benefit is that there is no yanking your dog's head to one side nor riding up into her eyes. The nose band on the Canny Collar is designed to be free-moving rather than in a fixed position, so that when your dog is walking well, he doesn't feel any pressure at all on his face. This is in fact how the collar works, using a pressure and release system - pressure when pulling, no pressure when not pulling - this is your dog’s ‘reward’ for walking well and he should only feel pressure if he pulls.

The slip line (nose band) eliminates pulling and lungeing by applying gentle pressure when your dog pulls and immediately releasing the pressure as your dog stops. The collar part stays in a fixed position, just like your dog’s regular collar.
