Description

The Sigma sd Quattro H has a high-resolution 2.36 megapixel electronic viewfinder, which offers near-100% coverage and a 0.96x magnification ratio. There's a dedicated switch next to the viewfinder which toggles between displaying the image in the viewfinder, the monitor, or the Auto mode, where the camera automatically switches to the viewfinder display when the user is looking through it and to the monitor when they're not. ISO is selectable between 100-6400, not quite the range we’re accustomed to with modern DSLR bodies. Further, noise becomes quite notable around ISO 800, making it difficult to get used to the higher ISO limits. It does have the ability to use Auto ISO and to limit the range, which I find useful.

But having said that, the SD Quattro’s high ISO performance is still not very good. Below are samples took at various ISO. Left is the full image, and right is the 100% cropped Sigma Photo Pro still has the quality edge but Adobe Camera Raw with DNG files has by far the speed and convenience advantages. Handling and ergonomics The sd Quattro cameras' ability to shoot in DNG means is that you can finally edit your Foveon Raw files using a converter other than Sigma Photo Pro. As you might expect, there's a few caveats. When you enable DNG capture on the Quattro H, you don't have an option to simultaneously capture a JPEG (although there is a whopping 13MB JPEG embedded in every DNG, should you want to dig it out). The Sigma sd Quattro has a very unusual design that's quite unlike any other compact system camera that we've seen before. Measuring 147mm (W) x 95.1mm (H) x 90.8mm (D) and weighing 625grams, it's wide and heavy, with a very pronounced hand-grip with a leatherette covering which helps you to keep a firm hold and accomodates a wide range of hand sizes. There's also a generous thunb-grip at the rear of the camera.

Update History

All of the sample images in this review were taken using the High JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 15Mb. Power Source Li-ion Battery BP-61, Battery Charger BC-61, AC adapter SAC-7 (optional) [DC connector CN-31, AC cable (supplied)] I don't like at all the Foveon Quattro tech, don't have nothing with the unique in the world exceptional amazing image quality, color appealing, film-like of the previous generations of Foveon, made of three equal layer of red, green and blue.

If nothing else, the use of the full-depth SA lens mount means you can use any of Sigma's impressive Art series of lenses. Film makes you think more therefore you actually learn more shooting it. You have to live with the consequences as they are tactile. I shoot digital with the same discipline as film and I am a better photographer for it. I don't see any benefits of digital beside ISO and colour balance over film. With this filter removed, light in the entire infrared spectrum falls on the sensor and with a visible light cut filter on the lens you get infrared-only light on the sensor. Setting the camera to monochrome gives you monochromatic infrared photos on a very high resolution mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. This isn’t to suggest that either
is wildly unreliable – indeed, most times the sd Quattro gives nicely judged, attractive images. But it’s less consistent than some if its peers and can be prone to over-neutralising atmospheric lighting such as warm evening sunlight. While there are only nine focus points, arranged in a standard 3×3 grid, Sigma does give you the capability to change the size of the focus points in three steps, with the larger size covering a decent 60% of the viewing area. You can also select individual points instead of using all nine. This combination allows for a fair amount of control for wide-open scenes down to a need to focus on an individual stamen on a flower. There has always been controversy over how many pixels are reported on the Foveon sensors. Sigma says the images in X3F format have 39 megapixels, while the JPEG Superfine has 51 megapixels. Yet, the images that come out of the camera are 6192×4128 or 25,560,576 pixels = 25.5MP. So what gives?
