Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood (known as Daniel Tiger's Neighbourhood in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, [4] and often abbreviated to Daniel Tiger) is a Flash animated musical television series aimed at pre-school children aged 2–4. Lady Elaine (voiced by Teresa Pavlinek) is Miss Elaina's mother who works at the crayon factory and is a curator of the Museum-Go-Round. Mr. McFeely (voiced by Derek McGrath) is the neighborhood mailman who is often on his bicycle delivering parcels and arrives and departs by saying "Speedy delivery!" He is the only human character from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood to be brought to Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.

Because Ashby is not Australian, I thought he brought a different perspective on Australian fauna. He argued strongly that Australian marsupials and monotremes are not ‘primitive’ animals. He gave due respect and regard to the indigenous views and beliefs about the Australian environment and its animals. Wolfe, Jennifer (March 28, 2014). " 'Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood' Adds Retail Partners". Animation World Network. Archived from the original on August 24, 2014 . Retrieved June 27, 2014. Grandpere Tiger (voiced by François Klanfer) is Daniel's grandfather ( grandpere being French for 'grandfather') who travels in his sailboat and has a French accent. He wears a blue pea coat and a blue beret. (The family tree in Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood diverges from that of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, in which Grandpere was the grandfather of Collette, and Daniel Striped Tiger was an orphan.) In the season 2 premiere, he tells Daniel that his mother was named Margaret. X the Owl (voiced by Tony Daniels) is O's uncle whose feathers are still the same dark blue color as they were in Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. He wears a green bowtie and brown loafers. He works at the neighborhood library. X's catchphrases are "How in the world are you?" and "Nifty galifty!"

Notes I made: 3 million feral cats living in Australia kill over 512 million native mammals every year. 1.4 million native animals killed per night. Annual death toll 1.4 billion native animals per year if you include reptiles and birds. Controlling feral cat numbers is an essential part if conservation planning in Australia. In addition 3.8 million pet cats in Australia destroy 230 million native birds reptiles and mammals per year. Cats only bring home 15% of animals they kill. Habitat destruction. Cane toads (released near Cairns in 1935) eat anything smaller than them, and their toxic skin poisons any animals bigger than them. Monitor lizards and predatory ants would be significant predators of cane beetles but themselves are killed by cane toads. Katerina Kittycat (voiced by Amariah Faulkner from Season 1-3, Jenna Weir in Seasons 4 & 5 and Maya Misaljevic starting with Season 6) is a playful kitten; she loves dance and music. She is O the Owl's next-door neighbor. Her catchphrase is "Meow-meow" and her favorite toy is Penelope Pig.

The author pays particular attention to the fact that he believes the current narrative around Australian animals makes them appear “weird” and more a curiosity, which perpetuates a colonial view of the country and its peoples and hinders environmental conservation. He feels the world’s view of them is belittling. All very interesting food for thought! Music Man Stan (voiced by Jeremiah Sparks) is Miss Elaina's father who owns the Neighborhood Music Shop, one of Daniel's favorite places to visit. He is also a firefighter with Dr. Anna and is in the musical duo "Bread and Jam" with Baker Aker. Music Man Stan is based on the actor Stanley Bennett Clay and his character he played on Christmastime with Mr. Rogers called The Music Man. Daniel Tiger (voiced by Jake Beale from Seasons 1-Mid-Season 2, Devan Cohen from Mid-Season 2-3, Keegan Hedley in Seasons 4 & 5 and Asher Bolduc-Theron starting with "Daniel Tiger Visits a New Neighborhood") is a 5-year-old [15] tiger cub who lives on Jungle Beach with his parents. In season 2, he became an older brother when his younger sister Margaret was introduced. His favorite toy is a blue stuffed tiger named Tigey, which he named after "Tigey the Adventure Tiger," his favorite storybook hero. Daniel normally wears a red zipper cardigan sweater hoodie and red sneakers (in contrast to Mister Rogers' blue sneakers) and he often breaks the fourth wall by asking the viewers questions related to the content in the episodes. He differs in physical appearance from the Daniel Striped Tiger character in the Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood television show. In his house, the wardrobe and much of his home furnishings (such as the traffic light, shelves with the Neighborhood of Make-Believe models, the Neighborhood Trolley train set, and Picture Picture), are direct allusions to the Mr. Rogers studio house. He is allergic to peaches. His catchphrases are "Grr-ific!" "Tiger-tastic!" "Ugga Mugga" and "Wasn't that Grr-ific?" [16] He has been the mascot of Fred Rogers Productions since 2018. Nana Platypus (voiced by Elizabeth Hanna) is Jodi's grandmother who lives with her grandchildren Jodi, Teddy and Leo and works as a hairdresser. The history of how the British colonial era influenced how Australian wildlife was perceived through denigration, compared to European animals, impacted their future. They were said to be inferior and less evolved. Ashby advocates for a change in how these mammals are viewed based on intensive modern scientific research. He even mentions how a leading French biologist in the 1700s had the same attitude towards American wildlife, calling them stupid, smaller, and lower on the evolutionary scale than European animals. The negative representation of Australian wildlife lasted much longer. Details of slaughter and extinctions are heartbreaking to read. Unfavourable attitudes by colonials did not carry over to other countries where animals were hunted for big game trophies.

Scientifically informed and funny, a firsthand account of Australia’s wonderfully unique mammals—and how our perceptions impact their future. Meet the Platypus Family!" (PDF). PBS Kids. Archived from the original on 6 April 2023 . Retrieved 21 September 2018. The author is the assistant director of the University Museum of Zoology, Cambridge - one of the UK’s largest and most significant natural history museums. He is also rather enthusiastic about platypuses! He is also pretty enthusiastic about all of Australia’s other mammals too, however the platypus and the wombat definitely seem to be his favourites!

O the Owl (voiced by Zachary Bloch in early Season 1, Stuart Ralston from Mid-Season 1-2, Parker Lauzon in Season 3, Benjamin Hum from Season 4-early Season 6 and Ian Ho starting with Mid-Season 6) is a little blue owl with green sneakers who lives with his uncle, X, in the Treehouse, He loves animals and books and has books about everything in his room. His catchphrases are "Hoo hoo!" and "Nifty galifty!" The author opens this book with an account of his first sighting of a platypus in it's natural environment. Although Ashby is a trained naturalist he writes with commitment and passion for his concern and love for Australian animals. He also writes in a lite’n easy conversational style. At times he is comical and self-deprecating. He knows his target audience. Leo Platypus (voiced by Milo Torriel-Gibbon) is a 2-year-old twin to Teddy and one of Jodi's younger brothers who is careful and shy, but loves to cheer on his family. Derudover handlede bogen sku for meget om ikke dyre relaterende ting. Kolonisering, hvordan man udstopper dyr, hvordan det originale australske folk ikke har nok rettigheder og bla bla bla (not to sound mean).A Different Kind of Tiger Mom". Forbes. August 31, 2012. Archived from the original on September 10, 2017 . Retrieved August 26, 2017. Chrissie (voiced by Matilda Gilbert) is Prince Tuesday and Wednesday's cousin and King Friday and Queen Sara's niece. Her legs cannot work on their own, so she has to use braces on her legs and crutches on her arms. Occasionally, she needs some help, but mostly, she likes doing things for herself. She has a horse named Peaches. She also attends the neighborhood school. As a part of the Royal family, she would be princess of the family. She was introduced in ‘Daniel's New Friend’. Chrissie is based on Chrissy Thompson, a regular visitor on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Trolley is a red, autonomous, semi-sentient trolley that transports Daniel and his friends anywhere in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. It understands verbal commands clearly and replies by ringing its bell and blowing its whistle twice, which Daniel often imitates. It is the same trolley from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Brian Steinberg (July 7, 2015). "PBS Renews 'Daniel Tiger,' 'Odd Squad,' From Fred Rogers Co". Variety.com . Retrieved January 7, 2016. The book provides a lot of information about Australian mammals - platypuses and their closest relatives echidnas, in particular - as well as their history, where they can be found and a wealth of other information.
