The Radio Times unwittingly invented a new breed of Cyberman with a variety of components from different eras. I'm calling him Cyber-Variant RT70. The image of this creation was still being used 43 years later in a documentary for the 50th Anniversary. Tynan, Alexandra; Cook, Benjamin (November 2016). "The Cybermum". Doctor Who Magazine. No.504. Tunbridge Wells: Panini UK Ltd. p.19.

The use of the Controller body also explains why in the Mystery photo the chest unit is wrapped round the body with an elastic band - the Cyber Controller never had a chest unit, so there would have been no attachment points on the fabric. This makes the unit hang lower and adds to the unusual appearance as it becomes more like a "belly unit". It seems fair to assume that in some corner of the costume department there was a rail filled with silver suits, and nearby there were various helmets and chest units on shelves. With so many costumes having been used in Tomb of the Cyberman, and a great deal more made in Invasion, there would have been quite some choice. Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis’ original script described the Cybermen as ‘tall, thin, clad in a silver link one piece suit’. Whilst this is largely how they appeared onscreen other details proved too expensive to realise. For instance, instead of flesh the forearm was supposed to contain shiny rods and lights, whilst beneath the hairline was also a metal plate. Similarly a moveable arm was scripted to be mounted onto the chest unit. These aspects were dropped as being too impractical and would’ve been incredibly expensive to deliver on a Doctor Who budget. Doctor Who: The Tenth Planet – Cyberman (c) BBC When I mentioned this curious Cyberman to my fellow researcher Jon Green, he came up with something else of interest which I'd forgotten. Although it wasn't necessarily directly connected, it was clearly part of the same story of these dormant costumes.

To capture the Cyberman shots, Ballard travelled to Norfolk early one morning to meet Michael Craze and Anneke Wills. They all went out to Cley Beach and Stiffkey Marshes and took numerous photos, of which only one photo made it into the final magazine. In " The Power of the Doctor" (2022), Tegan Jovanka and Ace fire gold bullets at a group of Cybermen only to be told that they have evolved beyond weakness to gold.

Jon recalled the 1973 Anniversary Radio Times special featured two Cybermen chasing Polly and Ben over a shingle beach. When I finally laid my hands on my copy, I was interested to see that yes indeed the same Mystery Costume had been used in the 1970 shoot but divided between two different Cybermen. The Cyber controller's legs were on a Cyberman which had a Tomb style head, whilst the Wheel helmet was swapped to a costume with normal Tomb legs. The Cybermen did not face the Third Doctor ( Jon Pertwee) during his era, but one is shown as part of an exhibit in Carnival of Monsters (1973). The Third Doctor would however face Cybermen in the 20th anniversary special The Five Doctors (1983).

The third model, seen in Revenge of the Cybermen, was a much larger, snake-like cybermat that could be remotely controlled and could inject poison into its victims. It had no visible eyes or other features, and was as vulnerable to gold dust as the Cybermen were.

On top of the head the actors had to wear a large lamp, fixed to the head on the left, the right and behind. It had initially been hoped to illuminate the halogen bulb but on the first attempt the bulb exploded. No doubt to the relief of the Cybermen actors this idea was abandoned. The heavy headpiece hid the tied jersey covering and was attached with clear adhesive tape. Unfortunately under the glare of the studio lights this tape did not always hold the earpieces of the headgear in place. This can be seen during Episode 3 where the Cybermen are shot down. Eagle eyed viewers will see one headpiece ear attachment flapping around with the movement of the actor. Time constraints no doubt prevented the scene being reshot. Between the series' cancellation and its subsequent revival, the Cybermen make one brief appearance, in the 1993 Children in Need special Dimensions in Time, as one of several enemies used by evil Time Lady the Rani ( Kate O'Mara) to hunt the Doctor. Fullerton, Huw (6 September 2017). "Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi had a VERY nerdy complaint about the return of the Mondasian Cybermen". Radio Times . Retrieved 18 September 2017. This scarf is two earlier versions of the scarf joined together. However, for ‘Shada’ the scarf was given a major overhaul. Frayed sections were removed and crocheted together.
