Far worse, there is an offensive and needless attempt at humour in which Forrest equates muting a WhatsApp conversation but still checking for messages with trying to “shield myself from temptation” from snacking on a plate of chips by covering it with a napkin: “The paper-towel burka quickly lifted”. We've also worked with the Michael Feinstein Songbook Initiative in Los Angeles, coaching and judging gifted high school students. Barbara is a native New Yorker, who grew up in a spirited Italian Catholic household – excellent preparation for a life in show business! For a memoir that is meant to show the freedom she gained by being alone, I don’t understand why it was essentially just a list of every single interaction she’s ever had with a man, most of which are romanticised. When she first performed the song in 1967, she said that she hadn't been influenced by Dylan to that point, but was after watching the movie. In the middle of the book memories surface of two teenage encounters that she is careful not to label but which were abusive and left her feeling ashamed and shocked.

If you read or listen to any of the men Mitchell dated (a few referred to in this song), all still smile when ask and/or are talking about her, they still smile, Love and respect her. But the fact that she has written about this midlife excavation with such ferocity and frankness is cause for celebration. I’m giving it the same weighted value that I put on being able to keep a roof over my head and food on the table. In 2011, Emma Forrest published a memoir, Your Voice in My Head, about her experience of mental ill-health. Steven Suskin of PLAYBILL raves, "The good news today is that we now have another Arlen collection that can be played alongside Harold's.My life's work is about digging deep into myself to mine the experiences I've had and then bringing those experiences, those truths to a song.

When she embarked on her celibate period, she had turned 40 and “felt very squarely in my sexual prime”. The prevailing notion is that if you aren’t super busy, you aren’t important or hard working,” wrote Bradberry in his post How Being Busy Makes You Unproductive. To them I say, Joni was only in her early 20's when writing this, even if it sounds like a it takes place over a lifetime.

This memoir reflects on so much more than just divorce; it explores her formative experiences, raising her young daughter with and without a partner, her relationships with her parents, music that impacted her, writing and fashion, the self esteem rollercoaster, making it through lockdown and her first sexual encounters after years of choosing celibacy. The Hollywood life she describes is a million miles away from mine: Ryan Gosling helped her to move her furniture and she went to the cinema with Jamie Dornan. A teenage columnist for The Sunday Times, she became a music journalist and published her first novel, Namedropper, aged 22. referencing Emma’s move from a huge family home in the Hollywood Hills to a small attic flat in deepest north London.

Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene "Fasano's insightful interpretations and effortless singing pull her collection together with wit, humor, and a wry streak of longing . In commenting on songs that run the gamut from Dorothy Fields and Jerome to Kern to Bruce Springsteen, Michael Miyazaki of Cabaret Scenes Magazines declares, "Fasano presented a master class in how to make a song a three-act play in 'Remind Me', veering from temptation to love to heartbreak to wisdom in the course of three minutes. We met a variety of men during Busy Being Free – including both her worst sexual experiences, and then, later, some of her best – and despite their frequent appearance, Emma does a wonderful job of making the memoir about so much more than men. Only after watching and reading so many interviews, concluded Joni truly Loved them all, fully and completely.

Forrest is examining, with an unflinching eye and a formidable cultural frame of reference (the title comes from Joni Mitchell’s song Cactus Tree), what it means for a woman to find herself alone in her 40s and to redefine herself outside a context of marriage, motherhood and men. Especially frustrating is that there’s no growth in this respect- she decides to be celibate for five years, and then needs her ex-husband to draw her out of her obsession with her new boy toy once she’s ready to date again. When I was a teenager, one man who – and I use my words very carefully here – had sex with me is now dead, and I know him to have been a very bad man, despite what the obituaries said. As I heard the lyrics the woman was very happy being free, going from man to man as she wished, living the free love life of the times. Part of the in-built narrative in her leaving him and moving from LA is the suggestion that she will now be financially less well off.
