August: Octopus Energy launched 'Power-ups' where some customers can get free electricity when there is excess renewable power. November: Octopus Energy confirmed that it will take on Bulb's 1.5 million customers a year after the latter firm was placed into special administration. Bulb Energy customers will still be managed by Bulb's team. The deal means Octopus would gain 1.4 million energy cistomers and half a million broadband customers to become the second biggest energy provider after British Gas. The entech pioneer, which has 1.8 million UK customers, has bought the turbines in Caerphilly, South Wales, and Market Weighton, Yorkshire. Each turbine can generate up to 500 kilowatts (kW), enough to power up to 400 homes per year each.

The Octopus Fan Club is available for customers who live in Fan Club eligible postcodes, have a working Smart Meter and are on a standard fixed or flexible Octopus Energy import tariff. Similarly, we’ve recently been running experiments to help other customers make the most of excess green energy. During our recent Big Switch On, it looked like the grid was going to have to pay green generators to shut off and waste their energy, so we paid customers to turn on their appliances and help use up those renewables instead.
