After all these years, I’m not sure what’s really left to say about the first Evil Dead that hasn’t already been said, but I think what surprised me about revisiting it for this 4K release is how Sam Raimi’s game-changer felt so revitalized by this new presentation. As I mentioned before, it’s been a while since I really sat down and watched The Evil Dead, and I was blown away by how even with this modern UHD polish, The Evil Dead lost none of its admirably rough edges that make it feel like a movie you discovered on some random Memorex VHS tape at a friend’s sleepover and popped it in the VCR out of sheer curiosity (yes, that is how I first saw the original as a kid). I can’t speak to the quality of the last few Blu-ray releases of The Evil Dead and how this 4K presentation compares to those editions, but I can say that this 4K iteration made me feel like I was watching the movie for the first time all over again (also, a lot of the muddiness I remember from some of the night scenes is no longer a factor here). largely succeeds in making the movie his own, of finding that balance that respects the original but pushes forward into a new era for a cherishedoriginal Evil Dead, the remake/re-imagining, and the fan-favorite Army of Darkness ("Shop smart! Of course I'm saying all this in hindsight: those who didn't (or have no plans to) see in favor of its relentless pacing and ooey-gooey gore. Just look at Cheryl's initial metamorphosis for a start - the view of Ash and Linda and the others over against the fireplace barely fits Campbell's head into the frame. However, on the flip-side of the aspect coin, shots such as the Cheryl-eye-view from under the trapdoor just a little while later on seems to reveal a greater depth, and the composition can often be just as comfortable and dynamic-looking in the blown-up image. Raimi had his reasons for utilising the two aspects and, at the very least, this image has been painstakingly formatted and looks far more comfortable than any previous video transfer.

The Evil Dead was director Sam Raimi’s first, and some say, best film. A labour of love, made by collecting a few mates, going out into the woods and shooting a movie. It took a few years and a lot of heartache to complete but there is no arguing with the finished product – the quintessential horror. Taking all the old tropes and turning them up to eleven, quite literally turning the screen red with blood. A watershed film that swept everything away and opened the flood gates for a new age of splatter, but played socomedically over-the-top, something that would be amped up with the sequels.
