I liked the element of counting within the story so you could link it to maths and showing one more and one less of Kipper’s toys. Mick Inkpen is the author of One Bear at a Time , Just Like Jasper , The Nativity Play and The School Trip . Well that would be telling, but needless to say the ending will be a happy one - as it always is with Kipper. There appears to be a few too many creatures in the toybox and Kipper is unsure of what is going on. So it goes, with pleasing variations, until the floppy-eared pooch discovers what the alert young lapsitter will have been following all along in the engaging illustrations—a pair of mice, now nesting in Kipper's sock puppet.

The charming full-bleed illustrations, done in washes of mostly deep blues and greens, make this a wonderful bedtime story.Via a series of counting tasks he is able to work out that a couple of additional friends may have just come to visit. When Kipper identifies the culprit he thinks his troubles are over - but in actual fact they are only just beginning. In 1989 The Blue Balloon established him as a truly original voice in children’s picture books, by which time Mick and his wife Debbie had two children of their own. A fun one for children to look at on their own, but I think I can still make it an enjoyable storytime.
