However, there's a disconnect between the political realities surrounding these 9- and 10-year-olds and what they actually understand about the world. When Ahmet arrives in their class, a group of children are curious to know more about him – where he is from, what language does he speak and where is his family? Since asylum can be a confusing issue for children (and even adults), here are some books that explore what it really means to flee your home and have to start your life over. I presumed this book wouldn't be suitable for young children but actually it would be an excellent way of tackling discussion around the refugee crisis.

There are so great quotes about refugees and their plight , with some good language for kids to understand. Although that sounds routine or commonplace, right from the start, a group of friends can tell that there is something different about him. The refugee crisis is something that continues to make headlines and it is affecting families all over the globe, including many in the UK.

Sometimes I think people like to believe a lie even when they know it’s a lie, because it is more exciting than the truth. Raúf is the founder of Making Herstory, an organisation mobilising men, women and children from all walks of life to tackle the abuse and trafficking of women and girls in the UK and beyond. Your class will read the extract and answer the questions to learn more about the overall picture of Syria, the climate, the civil war, refugees and more. This UKS2 task looks at the different viewpoints of the characters: the children and Mr Irons in chapter 7.

In her spare time she delivers emergency aid convoys for refugee families surviving in Calais and Dunkirk, and supports interfaith projects. With the refugee crisis a virtually nightly news story and many adults, and world leaders, showing low levels of tolerance; this shows the resilience of children to make up their own minds about things.

I was really worried because there is this kid from Syria named Ahmet in third grade, just like me, but he doesn’t know English, lost his dad, lost his mom, his cat is dead AND no one knows what happened to his sister! The narrator -- whose gender and name are not revealed until the end of the book, making the case for the universal every-kid -- has been incredibly sheltered in unusual ways.

Four friends decide to welcome Ahmet into their circle and when they find out his parents are missing, they go to drastic measures to help their new friend. In fact, the network of adults that cares about these kids is ever-present, which makes the adventurous risk-taking in the book feel cushioned. I am sorry, I am a big no no against bullying, and then especially when bullies seem to get away quite often with the crap they pull. I read this book in one day because it grabbed me and I was really attached to Ahmet and it’s like a cliffhanger every chapter. Alexa, who is narrating, has some funny observations, and is curious about Ahmet, and wants to help him, to the point of trying to find a treat that he used to have in his homeland. Alexa makes it her mission to be a friend to Ahmet, and in doing so, she tries to find a way to help him find his parents.

Unfortunately even though this book is extremely important and was really beautiful, I can't give a rating to it because of the author's attitude when it comes to trans people, especially trans women. She is also the founder of O’s Refugee Aid Team, an organisation that provides much needed support for refugee families surviving in Calais and Dunkirk. Her books are especially noteworthy for helping the children of today understand and deal with a range of issues in a narrative that they can relate to in an engaging way. This book’s greatest strength is how it conveys the emotive nature of its main theme in a way that opens up conversations instead of shutting them down.Es ist dabei kindgerecht geschrieben, aber auch so berührend und fesselnd, dass es auch ein wertvolles Buch für erwachsene Leser ist! This book is a fiction book and my favourite character is Micheal as he all makes me laugh the story is about a boy named ahmet that was a refugee and in a different country. Her first novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class, has sold over 100,000 copies and won multiple awards.
