A book begging to be read on the beach, with the sun warming the sand and salt in the air: pure escapism. Lyrically narrated and inspired by storytelling traditions, Hungry Ghost is astonishing -- my first SIX-STAR book of 2023. It’s hard to summon words to convey how resonant and remarkable this book is. Good Gawd. This was ferocious. Am I biased because of my Trinidadian heritage? Nah, it’s a bloody fantastic book. If this doesn’t make the Booker longlist, I’m gonna riot haha. As a young child, he was not initially interested in reading, but was more into video games, especially those with story-heavy plots. [7] Later on in his childhood, Hosein became deeply interested in books and writing, particularly authors such as Stephen King and Cormac McMarthy. [3] Of Caribbean literature, the 1972 novel No Pain Like This Body, written by Harold “Sonny” Ladoo, had a large influence on Hosein's interest in reading and writing. [3]

that you must see hell, stare long into it, so you can know when others are going through it—or had gone through it. The man thought about it for a few seconds. ‘OK. Go ahead.’ Then pointed to Krishna. ‘But this one says another word, I’m phoning the police.’ a b c d e f g Ramlochan, Shivanee (1 November 2018). Also a lot of cw to be wary of: ableism, colourism, racism, death (including graphic violence towards people and animals) domestic abuse, sexism, sexual assault and murder amongst any others I may have forgotten. Tarak dropped the bag. Lunged at Addy. The two tilapia flopped out into the pangola grass. Shane rushed over. Yanked Tarak off. Tried to, anyway. Tarak was stronger than them both. Pulled Shane into the grime. Their shirts soaked and heavy with grey mud.

My pa play cards with a man who work up there sometimes – Mr Baig. My pa was laughing when he was tellin it but it make my blood boil. That Mr Changoor probably just say is a dumb dog. Nothin worth going out in the rain for. Them people aint care bout nothin. Dogs smart, you know, but is only dumb animals to them. Just like we. So, I aint tyin up the dog, you hear?’ Trinidad is one of our favorite Caribbean island destinations so when I heard about this book, I knew I had to read it. I also love Caribbean literature and I was not at all disappointed with this novel -- Hungry Ghosts is a dark yet phenomenal story and Trinidadian author Kevin Jared Hosein is a phenomenal writer. Pumped his hands on her belly. Did it again. And again. And again, until a squirt of water came out of her nose. Then pumped some more.

Krishna reached his hand into the water, his eyes closed in concentration. He tried to do as Tarak said – to release his hand from his own body. The more I thought about this book, the more it grew on me. I would have given it five stars had it not been so crushingly violent in places, so let's call it 4.5. However, where Krishna goes to school is where everyone with money lives (and where everyone in this God-forsaken shanty would love to go). Bell Village, where it appears that Trinidad is reborn, stands the Presbyterian Church, proud and tall Mikey scurried to the hill. When he got to the top, he looked like he was about to yell something, but instead stole away from sight, the four boys now focused on keeping the dog from death.I think seeing that the longlist consisted mostly of under-the-radar books is a good thing. More Cannes Film Festival vibes than Oscars. The only thing I wish was that he had a dictionary for the words native to Trinidad. For instance, (I know Jamaican patois very well) a Duppy and a Jumbie are the same, just different cultures. However! Being from NYC, that's a word I'm highly familiar with. But there was a lot that I had to look up because they were more proper in tone. Just a guess! As I said, I listened to my ex speak Jamaican Patois for 35 years.

It’s rare that a title sums up a book as succinctly as Hungry Ghosts, Trinidadian writer Kevin Jared Hosein’s magnificent first novel for adults. She aint want to come near you.’ Tarak put a gentle hand on her and she stopped. ‘And you aint want to come near we. Just be fair. We was here first.’ Thanks for championing Hungry Ghosts, David, Mohamed, Wendy, Gumble, Paul and everyone else too! I think you all believed in it for the Booker more than I did (my agent is probably as upset as Gumble -- for he is a good agent!) Living and writing from a country that barely supports literature and has almost no real bookshops and only one substantial library, even being predicted for the longlist is a long way to be. I'm sorry Derek missed out as well. Atmospheric, immersive, un-put-down-able, truly impressive storytelling from a Caribbean voice you will want to hear from again…and again…. a b Anderson, Porter (25 July 2018). Like if you was holding a small hummingbird. You curl your finger like a hook and pull it up.’ The older brother christened their union with a name: Corbeau, for the large vulture, a carrion feeder, a bird that stays alive by seeking the dead.
