Description

These are the best shape bleed keys for forcing the square bleed screw (when it’s needed) as you can get plenty force on the big brass flat key. Este artículo fue escrito, editado y revisado exhaustivamente por el equipo de Cuida Tu Dinero con la finalidad de asegurar que los lectores reciban la mejor y más detallada información posible. At the end of this step, you should have a list ranking all your radiators, from the quickest to get warm to the slowest. If you are handy and have experience with plumbing and heating systems, you may be able to balance your radiators yourself with the proper tools and instructions.

If you find your radiators aren’t working properly, but you’re not sure if they need bleeding or balancing, your best bet is to do both!

A radiator Allen key (or hex key) is a large Allen key used for fitting and removing certain types of radiator valve tails.

Note: If balancing an existing system, the lockshield valves may not have been touched since installation so they may have become very stiff – in comes the lockshield valve key, or adjustable spanner – whichever suits you. Balancing the heating system in this way, allows all of the radiators in the home to heat up at the same rate. The best way to get a comfortable temperature while not wasting hot water or energy is to set your TRV to 2 or 3. Any combination of adaptor, handle and/or extension for 3/8in sockets can then be used to increase accessibility, torque, convenience etc. The answer is no, lockshield valves will never be fully open unless you are just about to re-balance the whole heating system.

They can be identified by a twistable chunky cap that usually contain a series of numbers from 0 - 5.Bleeding a radiator is the process of removing air from the system to allow the hot water to circulate therefore heating the home. To open a thermostatic radiator valve, you turn it anti-clockwise until it’s on the setting you want it on, or turn it as far it will go to leave it open fully at all times. To balance your rads, you will need to bleed them first – this is where the bleed key comes in if you are not sure how to do it, we have instructions just for you here. This is the original type of radiator valve, which only has 2 positions – on or off – so the only choice you have is to allow water to flow, or not.

There are a few tools mentioned below to make your life a lot easier when balancing your radiators too. Turn off your heating system and if it has been on, you will need to wait until it has completely cooled before moving on. For lockshield valves (the ones with the plastic hoods), remove the hood and turn the metal valve anti-clockwise with a lockshield valve adjuster or your adjustable spanner. Admittedly, it’s not quite as quick a task as bleeding radiators, so the whole process might take a few hours.I'm fitting new radiators and found that the lockshield valves I bought from Screwfix need a smaller alan key than the one in my tool kit. Note that these valves are interchangeable — all you need to do is swap the lockshield cap for the wheelhead cap. A decent set of water pump pliers can be used as any other radiator key which I would highly recommend getting for your home. Once you’ve rebalanced every radiator in your home, hot water from your boiler will reach them at equal speed and your house should warm up at the same time.
