It is a great and fun read that is really messed up, but all the while it touches on so many truths.Apparently it was initially published as a novella titled "The Brotherhood of Mutilation" and expended in the form a of a sequel novella taking place almost immediately after the first, Evenson put them together to form one novel.
Brian Evenson’s Last Days is simultaneously one of the greatest send-ups of the hardboiled detective novel and of the best celebrations of the brutal, violent, and mysterious nature of the genre. Brian Evenson was raised as a Mormon; he was told by the Mormon Church that he would have to stop writing if he wanted to continue being a Mormon. When nobody talks, the whole narrative sinks into a gloomy mire as Kline attempts to understand what happens to him, who these people are, and who committed the murder.Kline can’t really trust anyone in this bizarre, paranoia-laden landscape and every attempt to escape he makes just takes him back to square one. I’d wager it’s something along the lines of - it’s a slippery slope from religious zealots to fanatical death cult. The cult hierarchy is grotesque - high-level amputees (with, you guessed it, the highest number of amputations) won't speak with "ones" or "twos" (those with only one or two amputations).
