Disabled guests (and/or a registered Carer) with physical impairment(s) restricting mobility can experience the final four rooms free of charge, which are standard wheelchair accessible. Please speak to the team at The Castle Dungeon entrance for more information More atmospheric lighting (or no lighting where the mine is concerned) adds to the tension. And the character are definitely not scared to spook you here. Due to its intended construction being that of a military base, the castle has seen centuries of warfare and siege, with many bloody deaths occurring within its walls.

In his rage at his unjust demise, Abbot Geoffrey is an energetic spirit which creates poltergeist-like activity and roams the halls as a hooded figure. Another notable spirit is the distraught figure of stable hand Matilda who was reported abused by the Craven family. I won't give too much away, but it's a thoroughly entertaining jaunt with each character brought to life (or death!) enthusiastically by their respective actors. It's billed as an attraction for children over five. And while my daughter was a little puzzled at times, she was by no means terrified by the creepy chain of events that unfolded. My stepson and I particularly enjoyed two ghouls on stilts armed with bloody knives and machetes. They did however break character to dance to the music from the stage which was rather entertaining.

Book a short break

Bear in mind these occurrences are not a few ghostly apparitions and screams, they are full fledged spectral battles that flare up the sky. After the battle these incidents were occuring near daily, with such horror that the occurrences made their way to King Charles who sent a troop of soldiers to verify these claims. Sir Fulke Greville, who lived here from 1604, was stabbed by his much-trusted servant, Ralph Heywood. The murder resulted from Heywood learning he would be receiving very little in Greville’s will. Bloxham was caught stealing from the Earl and was put under brutal torture and shame in front of the public. Shortly after this, the dog appeared and started to cause havoc around the castle grounds.

The witches appear every half an hour (not on the witching hour!) so if you miss one of their 'shows' you don't have to wait too long for another. We made our through the portcullis and into the confines of the castle, passing a headless horseman and his solemn procession in the process. Leave all to the future research. The Power at work is not that of the mortals in the Castle of here. The Spirit of my called Edward Jameson is one of these who now haunt the place… The building is steeped in rich history having survived a raging fire from an unknown force, an outbreak of plague and the English Civil War and frequentlyreceiving visitations from the famous William Shakespeare. Many people have encountered the malevolent spirit with an aggressive nature who lurks in the dungeon and on one investigation in the Kingmaker (a labyrinth of rooms with waxworks at every turn), we experienced true poltergeist activity when a coin was thrown towards the group from beyond the gates. During one vigil in Caesar's tower the activity became so intense we had to leave the area. Due to the scary and jumpy nature of this attraction, The Castle Dungeon is not suitable for pregnant women, people with heart conditions or those of a nervous disposition

Reported Ghosts

Blades were thrust through flesh and blood spurted around like rain, cadavers crushed between hooves and boots; a sea of rotting flesh and spewing innards, dead men with dead dreams. The Dead Centre Stage in the courtyard was constantly busy with DJs, bands and dancers on stage at every moment. It felt more like a party atmosphere. And those creepy characters which strolled round seemed even more creepy in the dark.

It is said castle dungeon is haunted by a malicious spirit of a jailer. He enjoyed brutalizing the prisoners that he used to watch over. He used to scratch and violently hurt the prisoners. The evil ghoul has been seen hiding behind a metal grate and yells at the approaching visitors. Although the castle played host to many visitors throughout the 18th century, it wasn’t till 1858, when Queen Victoria payed a visit to the castle. Irrespective of the forecast, wellies might not be a bad shout as it was a little muddy under foot even during our visit. As for the attraction itself? Put it this way, Halloween has never been so much fun! The Bishop of Worcester, was not keen on the idea of a church being in a castle had it removed in 1127.

Warwick Castle Ghost Hunt

The servant was unimpressed with the sum. He considered it paltry and insubstantial to what he felt he was owed in return for his labour. In rage and fury, he stabbed Fulke with a flurry of blows from a blade at his house in London. According to legend, shortly after Bloxham disappeared, a slavering dog with evil red eyes began stalking the grounds and terrorising its inhabitants. While the mutt was eventually killed, his ghostly form continues to stalk visitors to this day. We were all really impressed with the quality of the food and the reasonable price. It was the same that you’d get if you had a country pub lunch. They also did a great selection of wines and beers if you fancied it! He seemed to be trying to tell her of a hidden item in the castle however it seems she was not able to locate it. This was their favourite out of the two - and they said it wasn't for the faint-hearted. It takes you into the depths of the castle making for a real scary setting. My partner described it as "hair-raising" with plenty of jump scares.

This story was then routinely revived in the 1960s by his son David, Lord Brooke, especially in the press and magazines promoting visitors to the castle. 3 It is perhaps no coincidence that these ghostly tales coincided with the sale of Sir Fulke Greville’s manuscripts to the British Library in 1968, and when scholars reignited interest in Greville’s life, poetry and writings (Joan Rees’s seminal book on Sir Fulke was published in 1971, for example). It was during the ownership of Lord Brooke in 1973 that the rooms of the Watergate Tower, suitably re-named the ‘Ghost Tower’, were opened to the public for the first time. The atmospheric oak panelling of these rooms, which lends them a Jacobean flavour, was installed in the 18th century and re-arranged in its present condition during the 1850s-1860s due to work undertaken by architect Anthony Salvin. The eventual installation of Sir Fulke’s portrait and seventeenth century furniture in these rooms would complete this vision, a relic to accompany the miracle of his ghost. Needless to say, a documentary report published in 1996 concluded that “Although little trace of Fulke Greville’s alterations survive in the tower, … it is unlikely that he ever lived in it…” 4 More recent representations Registered assistance dogs are not permitted to enter The Castle Dungeon due to low lighting, steps throughout, light effects and loud noises the midlands part of this realm." Greville served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1614 to 1621. He was later raised to the peerage as Baron Brooke and thenGreville has also been witnessed in the Watergate Tower where he spent the final moments of his life. The most commonly sighted ghost at the Coombe Abbey Hotel is a hooded monk who may possibly be the restless spirit of Abbott Geoffrey who was murdered rather brutally on the grounds in 1345. He is often seen wandering the castle grounds in a long cloak and hooded robe at night. He is also said to be the one behind the poltergeist activity that has been reported throughout the house, but primarily in the kitchen! Some have speculated that the Abbott is bound to Earth because he is still searching for his murderer who got away scot-free! Seven years later, thoughts of his mortality led Greville to draw a will. He had never married and had no children, so he made a little provision for his
