Obviously with it being written in the 60s I was expecting it to not be 100% PC by modern standards. But I was expecting it to have a point - some kind of statement about love and how hatred only begets hatred. The usual from Catherine Cookson. But instead what I got was kind of....nothing. The plot of the book was gripping and made you think. There was plenty of action. The stakes were high. I was satisfied with the ending but would have preferred if Bridget and James's reunion was shown. Also I feel like Matt did not get his proper comeuppance, despite the fact he was killed. I hoped for final standoff between him and Bridget in which she made it clear to his twisted mind that she wanted nothing to do with him. The central passage of his career were the three seasons (1986-89) he spent with the RSC. He was a noble, steadfast Banquo to Miles Anderson’s feverish Macbeth, directed by Adrian Noble, and played Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet, directed by Terry Hands, and Orsino in Twelfth Night, on regional tours. I now have an urge to watch Jean Anderson in The Brothers if a higher quality version could be found!

This is an old novel (my copy was published in 1968) full of family scandal and rags to riches.. or riches to rags. Angus's sister is furious for reasons of her own. Everybody is furious! It's only a matter of time before the you know what hits the fan! As with many of the Fifteen Streets residents, the McQueens are big-hearted and blunt; opinionated and often speaking with no holds barred in the face of any attempt to go against social convention.
