Description

A man named Allen West was supposed to escape with the rest of the inmates but, his vent got stuck at the last second. This federal prison's conditions were so harsh that escape, riot, even death, were an inmate's only hope. He's an ex-FBI agent who's been fired for insubordination but is lured back to the Bureau to work a case that has become more unsolvable - and more deadly - by the hour. It was an interesting book but it doesn’t devote much time to the famous escape by Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin. Archer contemplates suicide; he is allowed out and followed by 100 reporters on the day of his mother's funeral; he's moved to the Lifer's wing because of the security; and he becomes a trusted confidant for fellow convicts.

It stays high level, but covers the background on the prisoners, the planning for the escape, the escape itself, and the aftermath including the theories on what happened to the men. some of the details provided conflict with those provided by other sources i've read/listened to regarding the infamous escape. Under the cover of night on June 11, 1962, using only crude homemade tools, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin tunneled their way out of Alcatraz, America's most secure maximum security prison. Very interesting information, but the writing style unfortunately is not as polished as one may have hoped, and I think the book needed a better copy editor to clean up its prose.

Cada cuatro años, treinta y dos de los mejores equipos de fútbol masculino de todo el mundo compiten por el título de campeón de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA. Campbell Bruce chronicles in spellbinding detail the absorbing saga of Alcatraz—the "inescapable" prison—where America's most violent and notorious prisoners resided in tortuous proximity to one of the world's favorite cities. It was interesting to read about the different theories on whether or not the three guys actually made it.

Knocking off a star because some of Campbell Bruce's syntax is convoluted and awkward (crazy how much the vernacular changes in 60 years! By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. I chose to listen to this book rather than read it because I got the impression that it would be an awful lot to take in and could at parts be quite boring. Patrick Cullen took a factual book and made it very interesting - I never felt bored and certainly wanted to keep listening. When a terrible drought struck William Kamkwamba's tiny village in Malawi, his family lost all of the season's crops, leaving them with nothing to eat and nothing to sell.

The motivation to justify and fund Alcatraz fueled unscrupulous practices, secrecy and a hopeless environment men would voluntarily escape with death at their own hands or risk at the hands of guards or the brutal elements on and surrounding the island. On a May afternoon in 1943, an American military plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. The Great Depression showed few signs of letting up, jobs were scarce, and criminals made headlines across the nation. Each day we saw the outside world in all its splendour, and each day that view served as a reminder that we had wasted and ruined our lives.

Before we get to the escape, we get a history of the prison and its various inmates and the exciting events which occasionally occurred. During this golden age of marijuana trafficking, the country's most prominent kingpins were a group of wayward and fun-loving Southern gentlemen who forsook college educations to sail drug-laden luxury sailboats across the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and the Caribbean. The picture provided the tools they used, what their cells looked like when they escaped and even provided pictures of what the island looked like back then.W. Anglin and Frank Morris left without him but left behind a life jacket, one of the wooden paddles and part of the boat.
