If your train is being pulled by a multiple unit (like the one in the photo below) rather than a locomotive, and you’re travelling in first class, see if you can get seats right at the front. The first set of seats have a window into the driver’s cab; sometimes the driver pulls down the window blind but sometimes they leave it open, giving the passengers behind a thrilling forward view down the line. The train we took from St Moritz to Tirano was arranged like this and sure enough, when we got off at Tirano we saw that the driver had had the blind open. Our Bernina red train at the end of our journey in Tirano, Italy First class – older coaches St Moritz, where you can explore the legendary town. In summer, you can relax by the lake or enjoy some of the watersports on offer. In winter, you can go skiing or try a bobsled run. From St Moritz you can also take a scenic ride on one of the Rhaetian Railway’s other lines from St Moritz to Davos – also included in your Interrail, Eurail or Swiss railway pass. The Red Train Tours, operated by Ripley's Believe It or Not, has introduced visitors to historic St. Augustine since 1953.

There are several types of seating on the regional trains and a mixture of older and newer coaches. All the trains we saw on the way were made up of multiple types of carriage. First class – newer coaches

If you’re travelling in second class, there are two big disadvantages of the older coaches vs the newer ones: I’m so glad you found it useful! And that is a fantastic question that I WISH I had the answer to!! The truth is, I can’t tell you with 100% certainty every regional train will have windows that open simply because there could be train models in use that vary, which is probably why you also haven’t been able to find a clear answer. Tirano itself is a quiet town in northern Lombardy and would perhaps go unremarked if it wasn't also the departure point for one of the most scenic train routes in Europe, the Red Train (Bernina Express) that travels across the Alpine passes to reach Saint Moritz in Switzerland. Exploring Tirano Second class seats in one of the older coaches. The window is open as far as it will go – it’s enough though. I sat in second class in one of the newer coaches between Chur and St Moritz. The train did have the older style of carriages as well, but we thought that the newer ones with their bigger windows would give us a better view.

This morning we have an included excursion by coach to the nearby town of Figueres. Figueres, capital of the area and famous for being the town where Salvador Dali was born and spent his childhood. The Dali museum, which is in a former theatre refurbished by Dali himself, is an unmissable experience. Apart from three floors full of the artist's extravagant creations, the building itself is well worth seeing. We return to Roses in the early afternoon, with the rest of the day at leisure. The Bernina Express train has Wi-Fi. You’ll have to connect, receive a code by message, and then input the code to enable Internet access. When searching on Trainline, make sure to book the Bernina Express and not just a regional SBB train that travels the same route, or you’ll miss out on those panoramic Bernina Express windows! When you book with Trainline, choose only the express train indicated by the initials ‘D-Zug’. Avoid booking a train journey that requires changes (the Bernina Express is a direct train) or indicated as RE (regional train). Step 2: Book your seat on the Bernina Express So, that being said, there is no wiggle room for arriving late! Leave early to get to the train and arrive early for your return journey. Names - It is very important that all passenger names are exactly as per your passport although we do not require middle names. Note: there are two train stations here in Tirano: one is for 'regular' trains to and from Lecco, a town on Lake-Como, and the other for the metre-gauge railway route that carries the Red Train (Bernina Express) to Saint-Moritz.
