Right Guard is an American brand of deodorant and shower gel that is manufactured and sold by Thriving Brands LLC. It is the second largest brand in the male deodorant category in the United States. [1] Right Guard was introduced in 1960 by The Gillette Company as the first aerosol deodorant. [2] The Procter & Gamble Company acquired Gillette in 2005 and sold the Right Guard brand to The Dial Corporation, a subsidiary of Henkel, in 2006. Valisure filed a Citizen Petition with the FDA alerting the agency to its test results and called for a recall of all the deodorant sprays containing benzene to limit consumers’ exposure to benzene. What causes Benzene in Deodorant? Following Valisure’s announcement, only two companies issued recalls for spray antiperspirants due to the presence of benzene: In total, 24 lots of aerosol sprays from 8 different brands had levels of benzene above 2 ppm, 14 lots from 8 brands contained detectable amounts of benzene between 0.20 to 1.89 ppm, and 21 lots from 8 brands included detectable benzene at less than 0.1 ppm. CNN did not receive a response from the rest of the brands before publication, but the Personal Care Products Council, an industry association that speaks for 600 consumer product companies, put out this statement. In its recall, P&G said it has had no reports of adverse reactions, adding that “daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in our testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.”The results from the Valisure lab found benzene levels beyond the upper acceptable limit in deodorants and antiperspirant products from 30 brands. Two lots of an Old Spice antiperspirant called Pure Sport reportedly contained 17.4 parts per million of benzene on average. Secret Powder Fresh lots that were tested reportedly contained around 16 parts per million on average. Several of the aerosol products tested had levels of benzene at or above 2 parts per million (ppm)—the limit the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises manufacturers not to exceed in consumer drugs or products due to health concerns. High levels of benzene—a known carcinogen—have been detected in several brands and batches of popular body sprays and antiperspirants. Benzene is a colorless or light-yellow liquid chemical used in a variety of industrial and household products. But it is dangerous. Benzene exposure is linked to cancer and other illnesses. Benzene, which is not needed to make deodorant, was reportedly found in more than half of 108 batches of deodorant body sprays and antiperspirants that were tested by the independent lab Valisure, according to CNN. Benzene was reportedly found in 30 different brands of deodorant. Here’s what you need to know. What is benzene and why does it matter?

None of the products have benzene as an ingredient, experts say, so the only way the chemical could have been introduced is via an error in the manufacturing process – or by the way the chemical is delivered to the body. That’s nearly nine times the upper limit of 2 parts per million the FDA has set for emergency use,” Light said.P&G’s Secret Powder Fresh 24-Hour Aerosol (Lots 11721458SG and 11701458SH; UPC 037000711087) contained about 16 average ppm.

On May 1, 2022, a proposed class of consumers filed suit against P&G in Ohio federal court. The consumers claim that P&G misled them about the safety of its deodorant body spray products. The class seeks to represent a nationwide class as well as subclasses for Illinois, Arizona, California, and Florida residents who bought the tainted products. Tests by Valisure, however, found concerning levels of benzene in some batches of P&G products. The most highly contaminated – two lots of an Old Spice antiperspirant called Pure Sport (Lots 11671458SQ and 11671458SB; UPC 012044001912) – contained 17.7 and 17.4 average parts per million of benzene, said Valisure CEO David Light. PCPC and its member companies are firmly committed to ensuring consumers have access to cosmetics and personal care products with ingredients that have been thoroughly tested for safety and follow the requirements of the law,” the statement said. “Companies and individuals have a legal responsibility to ensure their products and ingredients are safe for the intended use.” Users of benzene-containing deodorants who developed cancer, especially leukemia and lymphoma, after regular use of the tainted products, are also pursuing lawsuits. In total, “24 lots of body spray products from 8 different brands contained between 2.24 – 17.7 ppm of benzene; 14 lots from 8 brands contained detectable benzene between 0.20 – 1.89 ppm; and 21 lots from 8 brands contained detectable benzene at < 0.1 ppm," Valisure said in a
