All evidence that I can find suggests it is very rare to find polled Alpines. That said, some owners do have them, so it’s an option worth considering. Most Alpines will either have beautifully curved horns or be disbudded (horn buds burned with a hot iron) as kids. Alpine Dairy Goat Care Oberhaslis are very similar to Alpines in coloring. Like Alpines, they are also a Swiss breed as are Toggenburgs and Saanans. Toggenburgs and Oberhaslis also have a similar butterfat percentage to Alpines, while Saanans will meet, and even exceed the production of a good Alpine doe. Did You Know? The Alpine is a medium to large sized breed of domestic goat known for its very good milking ability. They have no set colours or markings (although certain markings are discriminated against). They have horns, a straight profile and erect ears. Along with their splashy coloring, Alpines have an elegant overall look, with roman noses, erect ears, and straight, alert faces. Beauty and grace genuinely are of the most attractive qualities of Alpines. Typical Characteristics Hamby, Paul (2000). "Alpine Breed History". Alpines International Breed Club. Alpines International Breed Club . Retrieved October 9, 2015.

Alpine goats are one of the top milk producers, alongside Saanen and Toggenburg goats. They are distinct from the other two due to their low value of fat content. [4] This could be a direct correlation between the weight of the animal and its habitual environment. However, the Nubian goat's weight is similar to that of the Alpines at maturity, yet it produces less milk, containing a higher proportion of fat, than the Alpine goats. "Comparative Protein Composition Analysis of Goat Milk Produced by the Alpine and Saanen Breeds in Northeastern Brazil and Related Antibacterial Activities". PLOS ONE. 9 (3): 2. Bibcode: 2014PLoSO...993361C. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0093361. PMC 3968165. PMID 24675996. While they can withstand warm and cool temps, Alpines need a loafing shed or house to shelter them from wind, rain, snow, and hot days. 3. Grooming Alpine milk, as with all goat milk, must be filtered and chilled immediately upon separation from the lactating doe when intended for human consumption. The temperature at which milk will remain the best is at 4.4°C (39.9°F). [4] Cooling is required immediately of the milk so that there is no excess bacteria growth. Warm bacteria grows at a faster rate and multiplies so that the milk is spoiled. The milk that is refrigerated has a shelf life of about three to four weeks. Freezing the milk increases its shelf life by about four to five weeks.Alpine milk has a number of health benefits. It is high in essential vitamins and minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, as well as protein and fat. It is also low in cholesterol and contains no artificial ingredients or hormones. Alpine milk should be stored in the refrigerator and used within a few days of opening. It can also be frozen for up to three months. How to Use Alpine Milk

Rugged and agile describe Alpines best. Their mountain ancestry makes them sturdy animals, yet their long history in America tailors them to be adaptable to almost any region. One of the only disadvantages of this method is that you must carefully time when the doe is in heat to ensure success. Otherwise, you can count on the males of a large herd to get to the females while they are still in heat. Both French and American Alpines can be registered (the difference will be designated on their papers) and both varieties may enter the show ring. Genetically adapted to cold mountainous terrain, they may struggle with extreme heat and be more comfortable in cooler climates. 3. Temperament One of the most confusing terms in registering an Alpine is knowing if she is French or American and what it means.American Alpines: Alpines with other genetic influences after their introduction to the United States. American Alpines have much of the visual type and temperament as French Alpines, but may have less standard markings or conformation due to crossbreeding. Alpine milk is a type of milk that is produced in the Alpine region of Europe and is known for its high-quality and unique taste. It is produced from cows that graze on the nutrient-rich Alpine grasses, which gives it its distinct flavor. Alpine milk is often used in cheese making, baking, and other dairy products, making it an important part of many regional cuisines. The History of Alpine Milk Shaving a doe’s udder and underbelly will keep your milk cleaner and make it easier to hand milk. A sturdy pair of dog grooming clippers and blades will do a great job. – Bathing Goats are tidy animals, and dairy goats such as Alpines do not need shearing as fiber goats do. There are a few basic grooming needs that will make both your and their life easier though. – Hoof Trimming

Like all goats, Alpines are social creatures, so consider buying a pair of them to keep each other company. Breeding Alpine Goats 1. Mating SeasonFor an Alpine goat to be registered, there are several general requirements her ladyship must meet. 1. Defining French Alpines and American Alpines The American Dairy Goat Association faults all-white and Toggenburg patterned individuals. [2] History [ edit ] Goats are members of the Mammalia class, the Bovidae family, and the Caprinae subfamily. Many people notice that the word Capra, which is Latin, is also the origin of the word “Capricorn.” Appearance and Behavior An Alpine doe’s gestation lasts about 150 days or about five months. She may or may not dry up (lose her milk supply) in the latter stages of pregnancy. A rest period of a month or more is always reasonable to give Alpine does, even if you end up being the one to discourage her milk supply. 3. Do Alpines Carry The Poll Gene? Alpines are known for being extremely agile; they did climb the Alps after all. Add this to the fact goats are notorious escapees, and sturdy fences such as cattle panels or dependable electric wire is a must.
