Add to that the fact that the mix of this album is notoriously controversial, and you understand why I expected this to be one of the worst vinyl in my collection.

The band worked with producer Steve Osbourne to get a much heavier, more groove-oriented sound, and Codling's synths moved to the center of the sound. The areas of interest hadn’t changed much though – drugs, relationships, Hollywood, empty lives – and Brett could still pull some great lines out of the bag “Class A, Class B, is that the only chemistry between us?Some things are more important than ability,” cawed Brett Anderson in 1989, when he placed an advert in NME’s back pages requesting a lead guitarist to join his band Suede.

Anderson said that, "Most of the new material is more aggressive and less song based than A New Morning. Suede were being hailed as "the next big thing" [1] and, before the release of the band's first single, Melody Maker featured the band on the cover on 25 April, with the headline "Suede: The Best New Band in Britain".Anderson cites the surging outsiders anthem Trash as the pinnacle, but Beautiful Ones is more remarkable, the urgent, knotty wordplay of its verses giving way to an ecstatic chorus which embodies the album's title (the demo fascinatingly reveals that the song began life as Beatles-y whimsy). In the first interview the band gave as a three-piece, Anderson foresaw the scenario, telling NME's Steve Sutherland: "I saw it coming two years ago. He felt that by being in a band that had similarities to the Smiths, he would have done them more harm than good. Following Nude's offer, Suede attracted further interest from Island Records and East West Records, who were keen to sign the band long term. Kicking it off is Trash, a ditty for the downtrodden, a paean for the put-upon, and an anthem for anyone seeking romance in the most humdrum nooks and crannies.

The following year their debut album Suede went to the top of the UK Albums Chart, becoming the fastest-selling debut album in almost ten years.Such isolation fed into their second album Dog Man Star, a darkly extravagant masterpiece that stood against everything the movement they helped spawn had become. The proportion of worldwide sales in the US, however was much lower than the sales of the first album. After their biggest show ever at the O2 Arena in London, Brett confirmed that Suede were in the mood for more shows.
