One notable aspect of Rugby 22 is that it’s the first rugby game to land on next-gen consoles. We’ve been hands-on with the PS5 version, and while it’s far from being the best-looking game by any stretch of the imagination, it’s at least serviceable. It does perform well, with no noticeable performance issues. Take control of the biggest clubs and top rugby nations, and enter the most prestigious competitions in single-player and multiplayer modes, local and online.

The Rugby Challenge series was just a bizarre run of games, starting out with promise before ending up with recycled, bug-laden games as the copy-and-pasted game engine bounced around developers and publishers. As a result, many of the tries feel earned as you have to properly work through the phases to score. The implementation of tactics and pods - advertised as new, but largely available in Rugby 20 - only help that.Many players look like they do in real life and the commentary is also good. The new kits for the national teams look stylish and modern adding a realistic feel to the game. Gameplay-wise, this game is probably the closest any title has come to capturing modern rugby, and is certainly the best on-field game since Rugby 08. Among the official teams and competitions included in Rugby 22, players can find the top leagues with all the official clubs, as well as the major national teams like France, Italy, Ireland and Japan to name a few.

We haven’t seen any gameplay for Rugby 24 yet. The game was only briefly featured in a montage with some artistic visualizations. So, when it comes to how this year’s game looks, we can’t say just yet. The first, Rugby 18, was a bit of a mess. Rugby 20 was a more refined title, with plenty of promise. We also know that women’s rugby isn’t going to be included in Rugby 24,simply because of how much work changing developers has caused. However, Nacon “strongly believes” in the addition of women’s league and we could well see the sport included in the next game.
