Description

The author, Donna Milner, is courageous in allowing this silence rather than filling it with activity. And one could say the couple is courageous in being with what is. The land, and the couple's silence, hold much more than first seen. One night the sky appears "like an electrical charged curtain" with the aurora borealis, the northern lights. This read is a little different for me, but I really enjoyed it! I LOVE books in dual perspectives and the author did a great job writing this in dual perspective! I adored Maura and found myself really rooting for her throughout the story. Thomas kind of got on my nerves a little bit, but I’m excited to see his character growth in the next book. We got hints of it in this book so I think he’s on an interesting journey!

I imagine Julie and her family dealing with the same questions while reconnecting to one another. Julie remembers Darla singing "Galway Bay" and "Danny Boy" when she was just eight years old. Star Rating: B/c this ends on such a cliffhanger I am going to wait to give my full star rating until I read book #2. :)Tender and transformative . . . The great surpriseof The In-Between is that it makes dying feel like a peaceful, dynamic, and nourishing event that can potentially transform the lives of those who are left behind. Readers will cheer on Hadley Vlahos and, like me, be forever grateful that she wrote this book.” —Christie Tate, New York Times bestselling author of Group For many people, the truth is stranger than fiction, and for others – well, they don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story! Dominique writes honestly and brilliantly, from the heart. Her willingness to be vulnerable and grapple openly with issues of feminism, marriage, law, ethics, and mothering makes this book a thought-provoking, brave, witty and refreshing read. TW: SA, domestic abuse, depression, self harm, and likely a few others. Please be aware before reading the book. I love a good mystery, and this one kept me guessing. Above all, however, this is a book about families and human relationships.

As for the term "dead white girl," it could become one of those weighty book club questions. Darla recounts a story, "The Legend of Crow," that her boyfriend Levi Johnny told. There's a reverence for the story as she recalls the carved pendant of a crow Levi wore and later gave to her. And then she thinks he "takes this spirit guide thing way too seriously now." She mixes honour and a love for her boyfriend with a dismissing of his traditions. While Darla sounds like a sassy teenager and refers to herself as a "dead white girl," she realizes she can't move on until everyone she loves lets her go.But in between life and children, Niki is also determined to navigate her own way around the new world of print and publishing and connect with her own identity as a writer. Catholicism and faith sit center-stage in this story, which in the beginning I found difficult to read as a Boston Catholic whose family left the church after the 2001 abuse revelations. Glidewell has a really beautiful way of writing about faith that brings a lot of depth to the story, so I found myself able to enjoy the story despite my own experiences in Catholicism. While Darla shares the past story, Julie is living in the unfolding present. She walks the land in silence and sits in silence with the tenant who lives in a cabin on the ranch: Virgil Blue. She learns of spirit animals and symbols.

As angry as I was reading this book, I HAD TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER! I was up rage reading really late. You get a very realistic look at what it’s like being married to a narcissist while also battling depression and the isolation that usually goes along with that. Here is a novel that I received for review by Caitlin Press. This review will also be on the blog tour for this novel, so welcome aboard! I will put the synopsis here, then I will talk about it because this is what this is for: Their visits through the portal bring them teetering along a tight-rope of fantasy and reality, where they don't always believe what is in front of them, not even their feelings for each other. Despite it all though the one responsible for her death remains a mystery, glimpses of hidden hate within the characters belying an ending that tears the heart out and leaves it in tatters. Hosmer's ability to touch on real family drama and what one will endure for the sake of their children, paints life into these ordinary people who could live down the street from any one of us.

The story felt genuine, and the conclusion was one I figured out, but I wasn’t quite sure of the how. I will leave that for you to discover. A conversation at Tim Horton's (a coffee shop) begins the story of a couple looking to buy a ranch in the Chilcotin region of British Columbia. Then the landscape takes over and the first chapter becomes a beautiful description of the expanse of land. It helps to ground readers in place and introduces one of the forms of silence explored in Somewhere In-Between. This particular silence is an appreciation of the surroundings: the old-growth forest, the willow-lined creek and "a haze of coastal mountains." The descriptions of the physical beauty of Chilcotin country are so exact, so gorgeous that I wanted to drive up there tomorrow. You can smell the fresh air, hear the wind in the trees, see the sparkling lake waters. Her journey takes her deep into feminist philosophies as she struggles to understand the unfolding media- driven drama of the Oscar Pistorius trial while researching issues of ethics in the legal profession.
