That was the concept for Buggy and his crew in its second stage. At this point, Buggy already looks like his current self, so I decided to just go without including him in the crew. Outside the standard tankōbon releases, One Piece has been collected in two larger, less-regular formats: Before that, though, there is the battle with Don Krieg which - besides giving Luffy the chance to demonstrate to Sanji the power that comes from pure grit in the pursuit of one’s goals – also contains some amazing bits of foreshadowing. Comparison of Japanese tankōbon with VIZ releases. Note how earlier VIZ covers (center) were designed with visible title and secondary One Piece logo, unlike current (post-2010) designs.

The volume number is moved to a semicircle in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover, while the volume title is removed entirely. Nami and her adoptive sister were raised by tough-as-nails former mercenary woman named BelleméreYou're the Rare Breed ( あんたが珍獣 , Anta ga Chinjū ?): Luffy, Zoro, and Nami come to a strange island populated by hybrid animals and a man in a treasure chest named Gaimon. Only four story arcs (the Romance Dawn Arc, the Reverse Mountain Arc, the Return to Sabaody Arc, and the Levely Arc) have been published entirely within one volume (Volumes 1, 12, 61, and 90 respectfully). From Volume 4 on, almost every volume has interspersed its chapters with a question-and-answer column called the SBS ( 質問を募集する , Shitsumon o Boshū Suru ?, "I'm Taking Questions"). The questions, submitted by readers throughout Japan (and, occasionally, other countries) are usually answered directly by Eiichiro Oda, and are thus considered a source of series canon. Eiichiro Oda ( 尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

In contrast, three arcs have each featured two chapters titled in this format: Thriller Bark ( Chapters 442 and 444), Fish-Man Island ( Chapters 606 and 609), and Dressrosa ( Chapters 701 and 711) Once that’s wrapped up, it’s time to find out what’s going on with Nami, and why she stole the Straw Hats’ ship! And what Oda does with Nami’s character here is every bit as good as what he does with Sanji’s – more so, arguably, since we get all of it at once.Volume 50 has a different format of cover changes from the standard title, then picture synopsis, to a picture (of Nami), the title (that is surrounded in flames), and is then followed up with the pictures of Zoro, Luffy, and Brook. This change was likely done to commemorate the fiftieth volume of One Piece. Now THIS is where ‘One Piece’ really hits its stride, with some of the best character-work I’ve seen (across whatever medium). The katakana rendering of "One Piece" ( ワンピース ?) is removed from the cover header, and replaced with the name of the volume's associated arc or saga. Finally, there’s a bit that is very reminiscent of the part of a fairytale where a wild beast refuses to hurt the 3rd son or the princess-in-exile because they were kind to it. Which, OK, maybe Oda realized that 18 years later, and decided to build on it. But even if that's the case - still impressive. The Pirate Buggy the Clown ( 海賊「道化のバギー」 , Kaizoku "Dōke no Bagī" ?): Luffy and Buggy battle, and Buggy lands a hit on Luffy's hat. After realizing whose it is, Buggy targets the hat, revealing he and Shanks were once comrades.
