Description
Our fungal collections are particularly rich in type specimens: original material that is used to make clear links between the fungus as a living organism and the name applied to it. Empire. The collection evolved steadily over the years (undergoing a number of name changes) to become one of Hericium, the genus name, is likely derived from the Latin word ‘hirtus’, which means rough or shaggy. Erinaceus means much the same.

MAJOR HOLDINGS
In the gallery devoted to interactions between fungi and humans, you’ll see illustrations of which fungi are poisonous, which are edible - at least 350 species of fungi are collected for food! - and which are used for drugs. It is surprising to learn how many “wonder drugs” come from fungi, including not only antibiotics but immunosupressants and statins. Digitisation is important for any collection, museum or archive, as it creates a permanent digital record of physical material collections. By prioritising native strains we are avoiding the spread of billions of spores that come from commercial mushroom strains that have been selected specifically for their ability to grow fast and fruit heavily, and will therefore easily outcompete a lot of the native strains we have growing around the farm.
