Because they have lower thermal conductivity, they can restrict heat loss and gain effectively and therefore are a reliable option. Which? is the UK’s consumer champion, here to make life simpler, fairer and safer for everyone. Having many options for holding roof insulation in place is great because there is a solution for nearly any budget and situation. Let’s take a closer look at all of these methods for holding roof insulation in place to help you decide which one is the best one for you.

Simply attach the nylon straps to the rafters in your attic using a staple gun or other attachment method. Staples, nails, screws, and hooks are all viable attachment options, so choose which one is best for your situation.

Head Office

You place the metal insulation supports every few feet between the rafters or studs in your attic, and they hold the batt insulation in place. They are super inexpensive, easy to install, and have an incredibly discreet profile. If you weren't looking for them, you'd likely not even notice that they were there. Metal insulation supports are super simple and highly effective at holding batt insulation in place. They are simply pieces of stiff metal wire that you can slightly bend with a bit of pressure. Generally, they are around 12 gauge wire and about 15 ½ inches long. Nylon straps are easy to find, effective at holding roof insulation in place, and inexpensive. You can usually find nylon straps at your local hardware store, but nearly any similar material substitute will work just fine (heavy-duty twine, for example). Ensure that you've got enough lighting to see exactly what you're doing. Ideally, use bright LED lights spread around a few locations. LEDs won't heat up. The report will be going live at the following link at 00:01 Wednesday 15th November: Priority Places for Insulation Index: Mapping the UK’s Home Insulation Needs

It can be very challenging to keep batt insulation in between your roof’s rafters after you've installed it. Especially if you intend to leave your attic’s walls exposed, it’s essential to secure the insulation in place so it doesn't fall. Here are five of the best methods to secure your roof insulation to keep it in place. Loose-fill insulation is made from a variety of granular or lightweight materials such as cork granules, mineral wool or cellulose fibre and fits between irregularly spaced joists or around obstructions. It is useful for topping up existing insulation in attics. It can come loose in draughty lofts, and safety equipment and protective clothing are necessary to install it safely.

Insulated pipe supports isolate the pipework from the pipe clamp to limit heat transfer and thermal bridging. It also allows for a continuous vapour barrier to be carried through the support system. What are the main types of insulated pipe supports? Phenolic insulation is also much more cost effective than wood, calcium silicate or foam glass alternatives due to a higher insulation value.

As previously mentioned, there is a British Standard – BS5970 – which was updated in 2012. This is a code of practice relating to the thermal insulation of pipework, ductwork, associated equipment and other industrial installations. The 2012 update included a few significant changes. To help mitigate this problem, you should install metal insulation supports sparingly and keep them near the outer edge of the wooden stud to allow as much room for the insulation as possible. Poorly insulated homes have a particularly damaging impact on households that are on low incomes and struggle to meet energy bill costs, as well as households that have health conditions – such as respiratory diseases – affected by cold, or if the residents are older. Adding or improving your loft insulation means your heat will stay in your home for longer, reducing your energy use and your bills.Spray foam insulation typically does not require additional support to stay in place. Once sprayed between the wooden rafters or studs, it expands and seals itself to the surrounding wood.
