Bayard wanted to write a book about the “origin” years of the real-life poet Edgar Allan Poe to trace the formation of the poet the world has been celebrating since. The author was particularly interested in Poe’s brief stay in the United States Military Academy since a military academy is not an ideal place for any writer to become one. Literary Career: Poe began his literary career as a critic, working for various magazines and newspapers. He also published his own poetry and short stories, which garnered attention for their dark, mysterious themes and intricate plots. Some of his most famous works, including "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart," were published in the mid-1800s. The poem says the narrator attempts to leave but can not, as he is "spelled" by art. He compares this attraction to a snake beguiling a bird from a tree. To One in Paradise" was first published without a title as part of the short story "The Visionary" (later renamed " The Assignation"). It evolved into "To Ianthe in Heaven" and then into "To One Beloved" before being named "To One in Paradise" in the February 25, 1843 Saturday Museum.
