When someone has completed all three features on a painting or Bob has reached the end of the painting track, this work is complete! At the core, the game is a set-collection game where players exchange sets of cards that match the colors of different features on paintings. In most cases, the little wooden Bob token will also move across the bottom of the easel, signifying his work towards completing the painting. It wasn’t that long ago that a game being based on a familiar media property – whether that be a book, film, comic or video game – would simply be lazily layered onto a roll-and-move style design.

As players paint different elements of Bob’s painting, they earn points based on the number of different colors used. Not because there’s a ton of variety in the game, but because it’s a simple game to pull out and play. The player scores points equal to the number of paints used, bonus points if they're the first or second to paint this, and additional points if they've painted this feature before Bob (i. In the review, mentions are made to racing either the other players or the Bob token to completing the painting’s features. To take this latter action, the player needs to have all of the paint needed for one of the painting's three sections on their palette with no unneeded colors mixed in!

Given how cross-generational the show’s appeal is, due to the host’s wonderfully laidback manner, inspirational advice and charming turns of phrase, it must have been quite the challenge to come up with a game that did it justice and still remained satisfying as a design in its own right. So when I heard that Big G Creative was coming out with another game based on our favorite afroed painter, I was excited, but a little hesitant. Players won’t just win by chance – you need to have a solid strategy to ensure that you’re gathering the right colors and brushes to paint each section. Game Carpool Karaoke Game Glyphics Hangry Hide N Cheek How To Rob A Bank Kenny G Keepin’ It Saxy Game Kraft Heinz Variety Game Pack Mega Mouth: The Game of Reading Lips Monster Crunch! It’s becoming more difficult to find these days – it was initially released in the US as a Target exclusive game in 2017 – so if you do want a copy and can find one online, it’s well worth picking up. My beef with the game in this vein is that there is not a player aid OR this information isn’t printed on the palette board for easy reference. For a Eurogamer, it’s pretty easy to remember this… but, when I’ve played with non-gamers, the scoring requires constant re-teaching. It’s also less ‘board gamey’ in its mechanics, being a more Pictionary-style affair with drawing as its central mechanic.

Keep your eye on what other players are doing and be strategic about the sequence in which you complete the features. a painting is selected with 3 features and if you have the correct paints and the correct brush then you could paint it and get chill points on doing it.

If you want to paint with Bob Ross, you need to be chill, so whoever reaches maximum chill first in Bob Ross: Art of Chill Game wins. This essentially telegraphs to the other players which features (based on the colors you have out) that you’re working towards.

You even score bonus points if you have a technique card used in the feature or if you happen to paint faster than the master, Bob Ross, himself. You will surprise yourself by transforming abstract shapes and squiggles into charming pieces of art. There are 15 double sided painting cards in the game, and one is randomly chosen to be placed on the easel in the center of the table. This takes a lot of planning – and is made more complicated by the fact that you cannot “un-mix” cards played to a side of your palette. Don’t make the happy little accident of missing out on Bob Ross: Art of Chill though; it’s a game I can highly – perhaps surprisingly – recommend. It’s a real pleasure to encounter games such as Back to the Future: Dice Through Time and Horrified, both based on perennially popular yet aging licenses, to find that the designs are incredibly strong and incorporate their themes deeply to be relevant to the stories they’re based on. Players continue to take turns until someone reaches a maximum chill of 30 points, at which point they win the game instantly. Bob Ross: The Art of Chill captures the iconic paintings and gives players a unique experience that is a lot of fun. If another player beats you to the brush, you may want to wash your palette and shift your painting plan.
