For the best results when using Scotch Guard, have it professionally applied. There is a difference between their ability to apply it and your ability to apply it. While many people will disagree with that statement, those who I spoke with that were satisfied with their Scotch Guard application had it applied professionally. Those who were dissatisfied had done it themselves. The original formula for Scotchgard was discovered accidentally in 1952 by 3M chemists Patsy Sherman and Samuel Smith, although Patsy Sherman holds 13 patents regarding Scotchgard and is generally recognized as the scientist who discovered Scotchgard's possibilities.

Ceramic coatings are a chemical polymer solution applied to the paintwork, creating an additional layer of paint protection above the car’s factory paint job, and are an alternative to waxes. WS: Use either a water-based upholstery cleaner or a dry cleaning solvent to spot-clean stains. Both water and solvents are safe for use on this fabric. Aziz Ullah. "The Fluorochemical Dilemma: What the PFOS/PFOA fuss is all about" Cleaning & Restoration. www.ascr.org (October 2006). Accessed October 25, 2008. Scotch Guard is a common household name that conjures up images of severely abused home furnishings and carpets that remain stellar and beautiful despite the treacherous treatment. Of course, those who have never used it want to know, does Scotch Guard work? reformulated Scotchgard and since June 2003 has replaced PFOS with perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS). [4] PFBS has a much shorter half-life in people than PFOS (a little over one month vs. 5.4 years). [5] 3M now states that Scotchgard utilizes a proprietary fluorinated urethane. It all depends on you, your budget and your car. If you want the peace of mind paint protection offers, then it can be worth it – especially if you have an expensive sports car, a luxury saloon or are going to be doing a significant number of miles. The Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has today (Wednesday 22 November) announced a range of tax, benefits and savings measures. We round up the key announcements and what they mean for you. Scotchgard is a 3M brand of products, a stain and durable water repellent applied to fabric, furniture, and carpets to protect them from stains. Scotchgard products typically rely on organofluorine chemicals as the main active ingredient along with petroleum distillate solvents. [1] Development of the formula [ edit ] I started with my own home. We needed the carpets cleaned anyway. We own two dogs, and had recently had an additional canine visitor who ceremoniously left a stain on our carpet when we left him to run about the house unsupervised. Additionally, I discussed the results of four families in the neighborhood who have had their carpets Scotch Guarded in the last year or more. You can’t really hold the notion of free enterprise and crafty marketing against a company, thus let’s look at the real deal, the Scotch Guard. Scotch Guard is designed to eliminate odor, while preventing stains and dirt from penetrating its protective shield and still even promise not to leave behind any chemical residue that can be harmful to pets or small children. It’s not a completely permanent solution, because scratches will eventually build up on the plastic and tend to be fairly obvious, so the protection will need to be reapplied at some point. However, it’s longer-lasting and more durable than most spray-on products and leaves the actual paint totally free of scratches. Even a malicious scratch or scuff from people walking by in a car park may not penetrate down to the paintwork unless the vandal is really dedicated. This solution may not be the best option for most car owners, but if you are serious about protecting your paintwork, or have an expensive sports or luxury car, it can provide the best levels of protection. Ideal for use on rugs, most washable carpets, curtains, pillows, bedding, sofas, linens, luggage and many more. So, what are the options, and more importantly, are they really worth it? Is paint protection worth it? No affect on fabric - does not change the look, breathability of upholstery, fabric or carpet. Specifications These treatments (with brand names such as Supagard) can protect your paint for several years without needing any extra work. They are often offered as a way of making extra profits at a car dealership, but could be worthwhile when the time comes to sell your car so it's worth considering. You can always have these treatments done later if you opt not to have them applied when buying a new car, or are buying a used car. Paint-protection film
