Which was a wise move, wasn't it, as it prevented someone like you, Karkaroff, from turning all of them in," muttered Moody. Most interestingly, the memories viewed by the person watching in the Pensieve are more complete than the person's own observations. For instance, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Bob Ogden visits the Gaunt family. Morfin speaks to him only in Parseltongue, which Ogden does not know and so would not be able to remember properly; yet Harry, reliving Ogden's memories, not only understands what the Gaunts are saying in Parseltongue, he is able to perceive things happening outside Ogden's range of vision. It would be interesting to know what Crouch said at home on the day that Bagman became head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports! There was Antonin Dolohov," he said. "I - I saw him torture countless Muggles and - and non-supporters of the Dark Lord."

Lily Potter: " Not Harry, please, no, don't kill him, take me, kill me instead —" Lord Voldemort: " This is my last warning —" Lily Potter: " Not Harry! Please... have mercy... Not Harry! Not Harry ! Please — I'll do anything...." — Lily standing between Voldemort and her infant son [src]Judging from this hearing and from Sirius' experiences, the British wizarding criminal justice system at first glance takes an old-fashioned approach with the issue of prison uniforms: prisoners held in Azkaban for a significant time period have always been shown in ragged gray robes, rather than (as in the Muggle world) in eye-catching, conspicuous colours. On further reflection, however, given the wide range of colours and styles used in the adult wizarding world, it would be difficult to choose a bright colour that wouldn't turn up in legitimate use. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter 10 ( The Marauder's Map) -"“And then, barely a week after the Fidelius Charm had been performed —”"

The form of words used by Crouch here differs from that used to open Karkaroff's testimony in the previous memory. While Karkaroff was offering testimony as part of an attempt to plea-bargain his way to a lighter sentence after having been sent to Azkaban, here Bagman is in the sentencing phase of a trial. Memories are removed from the mind using a wand pointed at the wizard's head as they are slowly pulled out, and resemble silvery-white threads, or "gossamer strands": The thought-stuff in the Pensieve sounds something like the descriptions we've had of the substance of which a Patronus is formed. Harry, as we know, does not take Ancient Runes, so we don't know whether someone who has taken that class would be able to understand the Pensieve's markings. The Pensieve also reveals much about Neville Longbottom through what happened to his parents. The trauma Neville has suffered over his mother and father's sad fate may partially explain why his memory and magical abilities are impaired. For whatever reason, Neville has chosen to keep his parents' condition secret; Harry's knowledge about this will bring the two boys closer together, and Harry realizes that Neville has lost his parents to Voldemort, just as he has lost his.

At the death of Severus Snape during the Battle of Hogwarts, he left multiple memories from his childhood to Harry. Harry captured them when they leaked out of Snape's body in a flask conjured by Hermione Granger. When they returned to the castle, Harry secretly proceeded to Dumbledore's office, where he watched Snape's memories. [3]

Harry did not use any specific incantation, and did not in fact have any idea at this point what the Pensieve was or what it could do, so it seems somewhat unlikely that the selection of memories that appear in the Pensieve have anything to do with a conscious or even unconscious command of Harry's. Judging from Dumbledore's demonstration later on, he had been examining these specific memories just before Fudge's arrival. On the surface, Bagman is likeable and Crouch is not, but look at the facts. Bagman has been giving information to the Death Eaters, and is being let off with a slap on the wrist because nobody - not even Moody - expects him to use his brain to act like a responsible adult. How many people were hurt or killed by this irresponsible celebrity's actions? What was making Harry feel so horrified and unhappy was not being shouted at or having jars thrown at him - it was that he knew how it felt to be humiliated in the middle of a circle of onlookers, knew exactly how Snape had felt as his father had taunted him, and that judging from what he had just seen, his father had been every bit as arrogant as Snape had always told him.
