Description

The man witnesses different levels of corruption and bribery being orchestrated by the supposed law enforcement agencies. A driver who has just paid a bribe to a police officer sees the man watching the scene from a distance and smiles at him. The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born focuses on life in post-independence Ghana and takes place between Passion Week in 1965 and February 25, 1966 (the day after the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president). Njideka Akunyili Crosby tells stories through her work, and she is inspired equally by literature, mostly by Nigerian authors such as Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. But the stories in Akunyili Crosby’s work remain somewhat opaque, to be completed by the viewer. In Super Blue Omo, there are references to “Omo,” a well-known brand of washing powder of the 1980s, but also to the color blue, which suggests the emotional state of the character staring off into the distance.

He wrote this book in 1968, 11 years after Ghana's independence, when the joy of freedom had given way to hopelessness and corruption was running amok. Our main character is a struggling civil servant, earning wages too low to allow for any kind of a good quality of life. But he refuses to join in the corruption-free-for-all. O_O. This is major. Ayi Kwei Armah was espousing natural hair in 1968? Again, 40-odd years later, things are only just NOW beginning to change. It is slightly more acceptable to walk around with natural hair in Gh today than it was five years ago. And even so, you have to be uber careful because it is looked upon as 'bush' in most places. Próbálom bővíteni olvasási világatlaszomat, főleg ezért kezdtem bele ebbe a ghánai regénybe. Szóval aki valami igazán afrikait akar olvasni, annak nem feltétlenül ez a legjobb választás.cannot easily afford the food, he is filled with happiness and satisfaction that he can own such things—and garner admiring looks from the other people in the shops. For once, he feels satisfied with himself.
