How do you feel about the role women play in the story? Are they realistic? What do you think of Gloria Russell? Christina Sullivan? Kate Whitney? Do you see them as mostly victims? What is the relationship between Kate and Luther? Is it believable? What is your opinion of Kate when she agrees to turn in her father?

This was first book Baldacci wrote and the second of his that I read. He definitely started off on a high note! I did not care much for the other one I listened to (Memory Man – and I think the audio had something to do with that). I am planning to try more by him, but I am hoping that it isn’t a case of him starting with his best and it is all downhill from here! Having recently finished two of New York Times best-selling author's latest thrillers, landing on my top Books for 2015, MEMORY MAN, and THE GUILTY, (both 5 stars), I ran across a posting: An amazingly intricate and ambitious first novel - ten years in the making - that puts an engrossing new spin on the traditional haunted-house tale. What do you think was Luther’s motivation? He could have sent the letter opener anonymously to a news agency, but he doesn’t. Instead he is set on a personal vendetta. Why do think this is so?

Property, not conscience, is the basis of liberty. For the defence of conscience need not arise. Property is always exposed to interference. It is the constant object of policy.” An experienced burglar, Luther Whitney, breaks into a billionaire's house with the intent of robbing it. While there, he witnesses the President of the United States and the billionaire's wife having sex. However, their lovemaking turns violent and Secret Service agents burst in and kill the woman, which Whitney also sees. The reason Whitney was able to witness the murder was because he was behind a large one-way mirror that was a secret door into a large closet where the billionaire would sit and watch when his wife had sex with another man. Whitney escapes, but not before the Secret Service learns of his presence; they blame the wife's murder on Whitney. Whitney goes on the run from the President's agents while a detective tries to piece together the crime. Political atheism: End justifies the means. This is still the most widespread of all the opinions inimical to liberty.”Tavener wrote a satirical novel, In the Red ( Hutchinson, 1989), about fictional BBC Crime Reporter George Cragge's investigation into the serial killing of London bank managers, a small political party contesting a by-election, and a plan to overthrow the Director-General of the BBC, drawing on his early experiences working for the BBC and the Liberal Party. [4] Working with comedy-writer Peter Baynham he later adapted this into a seven-part radio series of the same name ( BBC Radio 4, 1995), which was produced by Paul Schlesinger. [5] He reunited with Schlesinger for the six-part sequel series In the Balance ( BBC Radio 4, 1997), about George Cragge's investigation into a series of murders during a FIFA World Cup at Wembley Stadium, a summit of EU leaders and an upcoming general election, which he wrote alone. [6] The three-part television series In the Red ( BBC Two, 1998), was adapted by Malcolm Bradbury without input from Tavener, [4] who was working with Schlesinger on a second six-part sequel series In the Chair ( BBC Radio 4, 1998), about George Cragge's investigation into a series of murders of dentists linked to New Labour policy. [6] A third and final six-part sequel series In the End ( BBC Radio 4, 1999), about George Cragge's investigation into a series of murders of journalists, was written by Tavener and produced by Schlesinger and Dawn Ellis. [7] Absolute Power franchise [ edit ] Absolute Power A lifelong Virginian, David is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia School of Law. One guy who was supposed to be very smart guessed who the bad guy was. So why does he do something stupid, go off by himself and get killed? Also the detective was not smart enough and trusted the wrong people which caused more bad things to happen. Example is of the first importance in politics, because political calculations are so complex that we cannot trust theory, if we cannot support it by experience.” This is the author's first book and also my introduction to this author. I do know that he is popular and an accomplished author as I have seen his books thru my Goodreads feed. In this one, Luther is a career burglar and has planned rather meticulously a high stakes job. All his forethought could not have predicted what actually happens and he soon finds himself on the run from an unbelievable opponent.

Embroidering the narrative through assorted plot whorls are the hero's broken romance; his conflict over selling out for financial success; the prosecutor's confused love-hate for her burglar father; the relentless investigation by a northern Virginia career cop; the dilemma of government agents trapped in a moral catch-22; the amoral ambitions of a sexy White House Chief of Staff; and the old burglar's determination to bring down the ruthless president. Political economy cannot be supreme arbiter in politics. Else you might defend slavery where it is economically sound and reject it where the economic argument applies against it.” To celebrate the release of David Baldacci’s latest novel The Guilty, we find out more about the American thriller writer whose 30 adult novels have sold more than 110 million copies in more than 80 countries worldwide. It only took one more minute for the screams to be heard. The quiet neighborhood was no more. On France:] The country that had been so proud of its kings, of its nobles, and of its chains, could not learn without teaching that popular power may be tainted with the same poison as personal power.”

From the mansion in Virginia, the sexual scandal, passion turned violent, a burglar behind a wall. Passion turns deadly involving the President of US. A witness. In Washington, D.C., master thief Luther Whitney breaks into the mansion of billionaire Walter Sullivan. He is forced to hide upon the arrival of Sullivan's wife Christy, on a drunken rendezvous with Alan Richmond, the President of the United States. Hidden behind the bedroom vault's one-way mirror, Whitney watches as Richmond becomes sexually violent; Christy, in self-defense, wounds his arm with a letter opener. Richmond screams for help, and Secret Service agents Bill Burton and Tim Collin burst in, see Christy about to stab the President, and fatally shoot her. Chief of Staff Gloria Russell arrives, and they stage the scene to look like a burglary gone wrong. Whitney is unnoticed until he makes his getaway, pursued by the agents, but he manages to escape with millions in valuables as well as the incriminating letter opener. When Eastwood first heard of the book being turned into a film, he liked the basic plot and the characters, but disliked that most of those he considered interesting were killed off. He requested that Goldman make sure that "everyone the audience likes doesn't get killed off." [5] Absolute Power was filmed between June and August 1996. She still stood there several minutes after he left. A series of emotions competed for space across her face, none, in the end, winning out. Among the Washington, D.C. locations used for filming was the apartment of journalist Christopher Hitchens. [6] [7] Reception [ edit ] Critical response [ edit ]

Second, Baldacci comes off as arrogant, misogynistic, morbidly fascinated by violence, especially against women, and overall like a person I would definitely NOT want to know; yes, his characters are detestable, but his *enjoyment* in recounting their flaws and failings in such a dramatic story-line only (to me) serves to put the author himself on display as someone who salivates over either the misfortune of others, or in general is a vengeful person who wants a certain type of person taken down as violently as possible, or is someone who is a sadist himself. A] sizzler of a first novel.... Baldacci doesn't peer too deeply into his characters' souls, and his prose is merely functional...but he's also a first-rate storyteller who grabs readers by their lapels right away and won't let go.
