Even when enlarged, ULTRA MAX 400 Film delivers excellent sharpness and fine grain for crisp, clear pictures.

I’ve also wished that Kodak would take Ultramax 400 and create an Ultramax 100 version with the same color rendition of the 400 but with finer grain that goes along with a 100 speed film. There are two different options for Kodak Ultramax - you can choose between a 36 exposure roll or a 24 exposure roll.

In the right light, Ultramax certainly does an adequate impression of the famous portrait film when the sun is up and we meter properly. The somewhat flatter appearance is also a big plus if you are into scanning and editing your images, as this provides greater control over the final look of the image.

There’s also delicate colour nuance that consumer films can’t replicate; Portra and certain slide films have no rivals in rendering even the slightest skin pigmentation detail in a soft, flattering manner that other emulsions would gloss over.

The fidelity of those scans can’t be compared to my 40MP dedicated film scanner and the flexibility of a digital negative . Optimized skin tone reproduction makes this film suitable for portraiture while a vibrant overall color palette benefits general and outdoor photography.
