A chronic duodenal ulcer prompted a career switch and he began writing books, TV and film scripts, including the Oscar-nominated The Citadel. Alternatively, the main character will be someone who is suffering unnecessarily, and Dr Finlay will help them to overcome their affliction. Yes the writing is old-fashioned, and yes some of the words are archaic now, but this is a delightful account of life in a small town. In contrast to other medical dramas of the period, it was set in a time before the foundation of the National Health Service, in the fictional Scottish settlement of Tannochbrae. His first novel, Hatter's Castle, written in 1931, was an immediate success, and Cronin gave up the practice of medicine to become a full-time author. I remember watching this, Janet was a sort of Mrs Doyle figure, ‘will I put your dinner in the oven for a wee while then Dr?

The latter shows the grit of working class Welsh lives between the wars and Andrew Manson, along with Denny's support, fights injustice, poverty and ignorance. This omnibus edition of Doctor Finlay of Tannochbrae and Adventures of a Black Bag revives Cronin's masterpiece for a contemporary audience – stories which are tragic, funny and wry and which are a celebration of Cronin's tremendous talent. There are a couple of other recurring characters who deserve a mention, primarily because of their strong characters. He's the angelic boy that makes you scour your mind for even one incident where your kindness could be said to parallel his, inevitably leaving you disappointed and guilty as you make plans to donate all of your worldly possessions to charity. I love The Citadel and was hoping for the same quality of writing, but that’s not what these stories are.

Dr Finlay is a general physician beginning his practice in the fictional Scottish town of Levenford. A Bill Simpson Fan Club was set up, Andy Stewart's Dr Finlay was in the Hit Parade for five weeks, and Andrew Cruickshank was invited as a guest of honour at the British Medical Association's annual dinner to speak on medical matters as if he were a real GP. Many of his books were made into films including The Stars Look Down, The Citadel, The Keys of the Kingdom, and The Green Years. Snoddie, Finlay's crusty detractor and Janet's admirer, played by Eric Woodburn and gossipy Mistress Niven (the district nurse whose formal title was mistress midwife), played by Effie Morrison.

Dickens, it must be remembered, also often wrote his stories for massed market consumption in magazine form.Cronin has ensured that Dr Finlay is a character with whom most people can identify and this level of realism and the humour with which it is presented is what makes the book so readable. J. Cronin's 1935 novella Country Doctor, the storylines centred on a general medical practice in the fictional Scottish town of Tannochbrae during the late 1920s. The different styles of the young and old doctors, combined with Janet's no-nonsense approach, ensured the programme's success for eight series. There was an episode where’s a girl had to eat raw liver, always dreaded getting a disease which required such a remedy!

This book is really short stories of Dr Finlays medical cases with a common character tying them together. These tales are set in the early years of the 20th century in the town of Levenford and the stories centre largely on Dr Finlay’s interaction with his patients and were most enjoyable to read. Although fictional, A J Cronin, who died in 1981, was himself a doctor and has apparently based some of Finlay's experiences on his own. I can see how it very much worked for a weekly television serial but sadly, unlike the Citadel it doesn't seem to have stood the test of time as well.Pretty boring, the doctor is given zero context as a character (despite being the main one), and the dialogs - gosh, real human beings don't talk like that. The first 6 episodes were filmed on the edge of Glasgow at Milngavie's Tannoch Loch and on Tannoch Drive (A J Cronin's choice of name for the town was "Levenford" not "Tannochbrae") On such details does destiny spin! Dr Finlay's Casebook" is a delightful collection of episodic stories of Dr Finlay and his life in the fictional Scottish village of Tannochbrae during the inter-war years and based on A. The transliteration of the local Scottish accent is charmingly done and easy enough for British people to understand, although other English speakers may struggle a little. His boss is a crusty old practitioner, Dr Cameron, and the wily housekeeper, Janet, keeps them functioning.
