Matt Freeman, Pedro and Richard Cole feature only briefly in this book; more important is the introduction of a new heroine (Horowitz's first female hero) named Scarlett. [3] She is mostly seen only in the past section of Nightrise, and is set to be the main protagonist in the fourth book of the series. [4] Necropolis [ ] Arrow provides innovation support for North East SMEs to develop the capacity and ability to innovate, with a focus on developing new products/processes. Over the last four years, Arrow has helped more than 150 regional SMEs innovate by connecting them with expertise from across Newcastle University, strengthening the local economy along the way. Following the initial programme’s success, which is forecast to generate 116.5 FTE new jobs by 2028, plans are underway to extend Arrow to other regional universities; Arrow 2.0 is being developed by Newcastle University in collaboration with Durham, Northumbria & Sunderland Universities. In his past life Matt was the leader of the Gatekeepers. He alone had the knowledge of the Old Ones and how to defeat them, although the source of this knowledge seems to have from been his life story that he read in the Library. Unlike the other Gatekeepers of that period, Matt was referred to by his modern name, saying "he likes that one better". And then I moved onto this series where, again, a teenage boy goes through something even an adult would never dream of going through. But Matthew is slightly different from Alex. Alex, although his parents were dead, had been brought up by his Uncle (who died in the first book) but still had his kind of housekeeper/guardian to always be there and look out for him. Matthew had no one. His parents were killed in a car accident when he was a very young age and ever since then he's had no one and has gone through a rubbish life. His aunt is useless and hates him, he's been mixed up with the wrong type of friends and in the first chapter he's arrested for stealing and then sent off to live with a strange woman that nearly works him to death. Northern Accelerator is an innovative collaboration between Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland, Teesside and York Universities. Funded by Research England’s Connecting Capability Fund, the programme has transformed the commercialisation of research in the North East, making a significant contribution to the region’s economy and creating a great return on investment.

Action Survivor: Richard. Small-town journalist drawn into saving the world because Matt once called out telepathically for help. But he has followed Matt all over the world and done his best to protect him, without the benefit of training or powers, and is still alive as of the Bittersweet Ending of Oblivion. It is possible that Matt could have some kind of divine name as the past battle with the Old Ones was so long ago that myth may have been passed down depicting Matt as a god or another celestial being. Indeed, this is highly likely as Pedro's past life, Inti, was worshiped by the Incas, in Scar's past life, she was Lin Mo, the Chinese goddess of the sea, and in Jamie and Scott's past lives, they were the Iroquois Indian gods, Sapling and Flint. The four of them represent South America, Asia, and North America, respectively, with Matt representing Europe. [ citation needed] Alicia decides to seek help from her boss, John Trelawny, who is running for presidency, and manages to convince him about Jamie's powers and to help him get into Silent Creek. Trelawny affirms Jamie's powers and agrees to help him. Jamie is given a false identity and crime and is put into the juvenile Centre. When he arrives, Jamie meets an intake guard named Joe Feather. Jamie manages to discover his brother is there in solitary confinement and Alicia's son Daniel is there too. One night, when he demands that a supervisor named Max Koring take him to his brother, he realizes that his powers do not work in the prison, because of some magnetic field that neutralizes special powers. Koring puts him in solitary confinement for his rudeness and secretly calls Banes to tell him he has found a Gatekeeper.Faux Affably Evil: Sir Michael Marsh and both Nightrise Chairmen. They speak perfectly cordially and with quite aristocratic poise, but don't even try to hide their hatred, scorn and fanaticism.

Humanoid Abomination: Chaos appears as one in his last two appearances, looking like a huge, featureless humanoid shape in a dark armour, who cuts its way in out of the very fabric of space and absorbs everything around as he moves. Badass Normal: Richard has moments where he's at least as competent as any of the Five. Oh, and then there's Lohan in the final book, who casually (and efficiently) murders his way across South America in his quest to survive and help Matt. Asshole Victim: The rich and powerful of Nightrise who helped the Old Ones bring the apocalypse in Oblivion are rewarded by forcibly mutilated and conscripted into the Old Ones' army. Also played with in the dreamworld. Matt finds a library, and the librarian is a friendly Middle Eastern man with shoulder-length dark hair, a beard, and sandals. He then provides some straightforward and helpful advice about how the books work, but leaves it up to Matt to choose. The implication is obvious.Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Albert Remy, one of the few Nexus members to appear in person, is this to Nexus Council member Danton (although apparently both served on the council at the same time and Remy was just never singled out before Oblivion). The Five Gatekeepers are Matthew Freeman, Pedro, Jamie Tyler, Scott Tyler and Scarlett Adams Raven's Gate [ ] Chaos appears in all five books, but is first directly mentioned in the third book, Nightrise. He is the King of the Old Ones. How exactly Chaos came into being is unknown, but according to Dravid, Chaos lived on human misery for many years. Eventually, Chaos attempted to take over the world by driving the human race into extinction, but was defeated by five children with supernatural powers called the Gatekeepers. After his defeat, the Gatekeepers imprisoned Chaos in another dimension along with his minions, the Old Ones. The Gatekeepers then built Raven's Gate to prevent Chaos from escaping his extra dimensional prison. Even imprisoned, Chaos had human followers to release him. Two of them were Jayne Deverill and Sir Michael Marsh, who sought to free Chaos and the Old Ones from Raven's Gate by using the blood of one of the Gatekeepers, now reincarnated as teenagers. The two captured the gatekeeper Matt Freeman and Sir Michael Marsh used Matt's blood to open Raven's Gate. With Raven's Gate destroyed, Chaos finally escaped from his prison and crushed Michael to death, having outlived his usefulness. Chaos then proceeded to destroy Matt, who had killed Jayne Deverill, but an explosion caused by the destruction of the power plant caused Raven's Gate to be rebuilt and Chaos is re-imprisoned in his dimension. [ citation needed] John (introduced in Oblivion) [ edit ] Richard Cole feels (of past Matt) that he [Matt] "... only had to say the word and the sea would part, the sky would open … or whatever else he had in mind ..." Over Shadowed By Awesome: The World Army is made up of elite soldiers from every country in the world who came to Antartica to fight the Old Ones and restore balance, but the story belongs to the Gatekeepers, and not them.

Matt is a Gatekeeper and is a very advanced telekinetic. Matt does not have full control over his abilities and it is stated it can only work under massive desperation. When he uses his powers he sees his kitchen the morning his parents die. However, by the fourth book, Necropolis, he has learned to use his abilities on command as he has met three of the other Gatekeepers. Scarlett is the fifth Gatekeeper. She appears to be Eurasian, or completely Asian, but was adopted by Europeans and lived in Dulwich. Her parents divorced and moved to other countries, leaving Scarlett behind to complete her studies. Scarlett is first found by the Old Ones when she goes through one of the doorways in St Meredith's Church while on a school trip, and ends up in the Cry For Mercy in Ukraine, where she is captured by a monk who tells her the story of who she is, and makes a narrow escape. Her father, Paul Adams, worked for the Nightrise Corporation and forced Scarlett to fly to Hong Kong to see him, saying that a crisis had arisen, although it was a trap as the Old Ones had control of the city and knew she was a Gatekeeper. However, Scarlett was able to escape temporarily with help from a man called Lohan and a group of Triads known as the White Lotus. The Triads also try to smuggle Matt and Jamie into the city, but they were betrayed and separated. [ citation needed]As a research-intensive university we embed quality research at the centre of everything we do, enabling us to meet the world’s changing needs and make a positive difference. This is significant for the region, not only for local students who wish to benefit from a research-informed education, but also for regional businesses who can access impactful research and innovative partnership opportunities. Creepy Changing Painting: There's one in Jayne Deverill's house in Raven's Gate. It's supposedly of her distant ancestor... This story begins with two men, Colton Bane and Kyle Hovey, who work for an evil corporation called Nightrise, waiting outside a theatre in Reno, Nevada. They are waiting to kidnap identical twin brothers Jamie and Scott Tyler, who are part of a magic show in the theatre. Their foster parent, Don White, sells the twins off to them, but Jamie and Scott escape and are pursued. Scott is captured but Jamie is rescued by a woman. He awakens at the woman's house, who introduces herself as Alicia and tells that her son, Daniel, was kidnapped by the same corporation after exhibiting clairvoyant powers. She takes Jamie to his foster parents' house only to realize they have been murdered, and escape the police only when Jamie uses his telepathic powers. In Oblivion, John is the adopted grandfather of Holly and George. He lived in the village surrounding St Botolph's Church, Hardham, which is where the Door was the Jamie came through from the Tai Shan Temple in Hong Kong. He was married to Rita. [ citation needed] Alicia McGuire (introduced in Nightrise) [ edit ] Anyone Can Die: If you're an adult who has even met the Gatekeepers, you might as well start saying your prayers now. The only significant adult companions of the Five who survive more than one book are Richard Cole and Lohan. In fact, even the Gatekeepers themselves aren't safe - Scarlett and Pedro are the only ones who are never killed and then replaced by their past selves.

In Necropolis, he went through the doorway in the Tai Shan Temple along with Scott, and ended up in Italy 10 years later. He was held as a prisoner in a castle situated in Naples, along with Scott. After a few weeks of being held in prison, Scott under the influence of the Old Ones joins their side along with Jonas Mortlake, son of Susan Mortlake, while Pedro afterwards escaped the prison and travelled to Rome with the help of an Italian boy named Giovanni. He used the door in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome to get to Oblivion, Antarctica where he and the remaining four finally defeat the Old Ones. After winning the battle, he joins Matt and the other three to live in the dreamworld situated beyond the mountains of Oblivion. Working together with our industry and academic partners, we are ensuring the North East is a global leader in sectors which are vital to innovation and economic growth in today’s society, such as Net Zero, digital technology and the biosciences. Break the Cutie: Pedro endures a lot of this in Oblivion, what with witnessing Scott's betrayal and being forced to swim though raw sewage. He then almost dies from poisoning when another of his supposed allies betrays him. There's only so much The Heart can take. Together with our partners in the public and private sectors, working with local communities, we are adding real value, positioning us to help deliver on the promises of the Levelling Up agenda and build a more resilient society and economy in the North East.” Necropolis: Scarlett is introduced here after being teased in the Nightrise. Scarlett goes on a school trip to an ancient English church for her art class. It is there that she sees an apparition of Matt pass through an unusual door at the end of the hall. She follows him, only to find herself in Ukraine and in the hands of a satanic cult called the Monastery for the Cry for Mercy. She manages to escape, only to be plastered all over the news and revealed to the Nightrise organization, forcing her to head to Hong Kong to figure out Necropolis actually is. Meanwhile, the rest of the Five plan to save her when tragedy strikes, forcing Matt and Jamie to split up from Scott and Pedro and head to England. We look forward to further developing this work, enabling this region to continue to benefit from progress and meet the challenges of the 21st century.” Working together Wrong Genre Savvy: Commander Cain shows some of this, fighting demons with tactics better suited for human opponents, although he’s smart enough to use Scarlett's magic to provide cover in the form of an ice storm. Defector from Decadence: Commander Cain provides an excellent example of this in Oblivion, having an inner monologue describing how America has been falling apart since the Old Ones returned, which is why he didn’t’ hesitate to abandon his official duties and go North to fight them. It's implied that this is also true of most of the other members of the World Army.
