Mr. Mehner, your newly launched EU project PONDERFUL is all about small freshwater ecosystems. This involves you taking a close look at an area in northeast Germany. How beneficial are kettle holes and pools not only there, but elsewhere, too? These waterways are most common around river deltas as the water from the primary river starts to flow into a number of different branches before emptying into an ocean or lake. The term channel is generally used to describe wide waterways that flow between two islands or other landmasses. Channels can also be called straits, though the term strait is usually reserved for much larger channels.

an artificial waterway, usually connected to (and sometimes connecting) existing lakes, rivers, or oceans. Inlets can vary in size with some being just a few miles long. At the same time, there are some very large inlets, such as the Cook Inlet in Alaska, which is about 180 miles (290 km) long and runs down the western edge of the Kenai Peninsula. A series of loosely connected essays, Small Bodies of Water’s luscious prose flows deftly between moments in the author’s international life, each so vividly and sensuously portrayed as to immerse us in a world, and the age at which that world was lived. We move with Powles across time and geography – from adolescence to adulthood , from Borneo to New Zealand to London – exploring the fluid (and sometimes suspended) nature of identity and home. Deeply embodied, the pleasures of swimming, food, languages, flora and fauna are keenly felt as anchors, and an almost aqueous merging of the bloodline across generations pulses through it.When most of us picture bodies of water, we think of lakes, rivers, streams, and oceans. However, there are dozens of different types of bodies of water out there, each of which plays a vital role in its local ecosystems. Funnily enough, there is actually one lake in Scotland that’s not a loch— Lake Menteith. Lake Menteith is famous for being the only “lake” in Scotland, but it was actually called the Loch of Menteith in the nineteenth century. 26. Marsh

The other type of lagoon, the coastal lagoon, forms along coastlines. These lagoons tend to be shallower than their atoll cousins and they are usually cut off from the larger ocean by a sandbar, reef, or island. 24. Lake While wetlands may not be what most of us think of when we picture a body of water, they can be quite large. Furthermore, wetlands can often support aquatic animals, such as fish, so they can certainly be classified as bodies of water.A lagoon (#48) is a shallow elongated body of water separated form a larger body of water by a sandbank, coral reef or other barrier, while a barachois (#49) is a coastal lagoon separation by the ocean by a sand bar that may periodically get filled with salt water when the tide is high. Moats were particularly popular during the Middle Ages as an additional way to protect a castle. However, since the end of the Middle Ages, most of the world’s remaining moats are simply ornamental and many now support their own freshwater ecosystems. 28. Ocean Sometimes home is not a place but a collection of things that have fallen or been left behind: dried agapanthus pods, the exoskeletons of cicadas (tiny ghosts still clinging to the trees), the discarded shells of quail’s eggs on Po Po’s plate, cherry pips in the grass, the drowned chrysanthemum bud in the bottom of the teapot.’ For millennia, billabongs were critical sources of water for the Indigenous peoples that live in arid parts of what is now Australia. They also continue to play a critical role in the country’s many ecosystems today. 8. Brook (Bourne) As a result, the term “arroyo” is most commonly used in Spanish-speaking countries, including in Central and South America, as well as in Mexico and the southwestern United States.
