While old 70-200s had their zoom rings in the middle of the lens, it's finally up front where your hand is. Now you have to move a little bit if you need to tweak the focus, while the zoom ring you use all the time is right where we need it. x 450 pixel crop from above image. If this crop is about 6" (15cm) wide on our screen, then the complete image printed at this same extreme magnification would be about 75 x 50." (6 x 4 feet, or 2 x 1.25 meters)! Those are massive advantages for the new RF lens. Because the barrel now extends, rather than focusing internally as its DSLR predecessor does, it's the shortest 70-200mm f/2.8 lens around. It's just 146mm when zoomed down to its 70mm focal length –far shorter than the 199mm of the EF version. While at 200mm it's ever-so-slightly longer than the EF, for travel and carrying around the RF version is a ridiculously compact option that you can even stand upright in your camera bag.prevents the lens from focussing closer than 5 meters (15 feet). Use this only if you're having a problem with the lens trying to focus too closely, for instance, if interfering objects are in the way. This is an ideal lens for daytime sports because you don't need IS (Image Stabilization) or the f/2.8 speed of Canon's other 70-200mm lenses, and this one retains the super-fast focusing and excellent image quality you do need. This is fairly typical of the 70-200mm f/4 L when pointed into the sun. It does the same thing with or without a filter.

Built-in flashes are often so close to the camera that some lenses can see far enough down to see their shadow cast by a built-in flash. Optically, this lens is about the same as the 70-200mm f/4L IS, which is excellent, but not as over-the-top perfect as the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. In each performance aspect, this non-IS lens is almost, but not quite as good as the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. Most people would never notice, so if money matters, get this original non-IS lens. If you need the best regardless of cost, pay twice as much for the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, which also gets you slightly faster autofocus and Image Stabilization. It works great on APS-C cameras, too, on which you may make the usual inferences, however for APS-C you might prefer the 55-250mm IS STM for half the price that adds Image Stabilization and a broader zoom range. SPORT is for use in a helicopter, sand rail, or motorcycle. SPORT is also OK for hand-holding while still, and intended for use from an unstable platform. There are no color fringes as shot on modern Nikon DSLRs, which by default correct any that may be there.

Fulfilling the dream of mirrorless and quite different from Sony's big, fat and bloated 70-200/2.8 GM, this Canon RF 70-200/2.8 is much smaller and lighter than any other 70-200 f/2.8. It's about half the length of other 70-200/2.8s. It's the lightest 70-200/2.8 ever made and focuses super close. BRAVO! The 70-200mm F2.8 falls short of competitors in one area—macro photography. The Tamron 70-180mm G2 and the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM II focus closer, for 1:2.6 and 1:3 magnification, respectively. The Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 manages 1:5.2 at its 200mm focal length and 39.4-inch minimum focus distance, so it matches up more closely with the Lumix S Pro 70-200mm F2.8 and its 1:5 macro focus. The lens focuses to 25.6 inches at 70mm, but the wider angle results in less magnification. For macro photographers who don't mind an F4 zoom, the FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II is the best in the class thanks to its 1:2 reproduction. We run a range of lab tests under controlled conditions, using the Imatest Master testing suite. Photos of test charts are taken across the range of apertures and zooms (where available), then analyzed for sharpness, distortion and chromatic aberrations. See Is It Worth It and Should You Upgrade. If you deserve the best or shoot for a living, of course you need this, but if you're a student, of course you don't. At 135mm, it's a very little bit softer at f/2.8 in the center, and softer in the corners, sharpening up in the center and corners by f/4. A bayonet hood would be more convenient, even if it meant dropping the rubber bumper that's at the front of the lens barrel. It's an uncommon feature that adds a bit of protection to the front element and filter ring, at the slight cost of some filter compatibility. Regular 77mm filters are not an issue with the lens, but the bumper might interfere with specialized filters like the H&Y RevoRing Variable ND; its adjustable threads can't get close enough to thread in. This said, even wide-open at f/2.8 it's ultrasharp everywhere at every focal length. Just look at my Sample Images. BRAVO! Falloff on FX and 35mm is invisible, except at 200mm at f/2.8 if you leave Vignette Correction OFF, which is the same way just about every Nikon f2.8 tele zoom has been since the 1980s. This lens is designed for hand-held shooting, so pull off the collar and leave it in the box for resale. The lens' four AF buttons are much easier to reach than using the one on the camera. The lens' AF buttons are easy to use while holding the camera in any orientation.
