Encyclopedia of Popular Music (4thed.). Oxford: Oxford University Press. ISBN 978-0195313734. The writer for Rolling Stone exclaimed, "James bloomed into a fiery interpreter on this spellbinding LP." [3] Commercial response [ edit ] When she did, she made up for lost time. She had four soul and pop entries in 1960, two of them duets with Harvey Fuqua, including their version of “Spoonful.” Then came “At Last,” which only reached No.47 pop, but went to No.2 R&B.

Yes, sometimes the album is so intense that it can be taken only one side at a time, but the sensational feeling one gets rolling off into the morning sun with Etta James on the car stereo, is pure satisfaction. The song didn’t make it across the Atlantic at the time, but gained the respect of the modern generation with widespread exposure, including a Grammy Hall of Fame placing in 1999. It made the UK chart for the first time in 2010 and finally reached No.39 immediately after Etta’s death, in January 2012.

Notes

Petrusich, Amanda (April 24, 2016). "Etta James: At Last! Album Review". Pitchfork . Retrieved April 25, 2016. Ask most musicians, and Etta James will certainly show up in their music collection, probe a bit deeper, and those same musicians will admit to Etta James’ influence, but ask the fans of these same artists, and most of them, if honest, will admit that they’ve never listened on even one Etta James song ... and that causes me to shake my head in wonder. At Last! was ranked at #191 on Rolling Stone 's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. [3] It was ranked as the 62nd best album of the 1960s by Pitchfork. [6] History [ edit ] The Sims (February 8, 2022).
