Expected battery life: Alkaline – approximately 20 hours; Rechargeable Ni-MH – approximately 25 hours when using 2,400mAh capacity batteries The Roland CUBE Street is designed to be extremely versatile; it is equally at home with a folk singer as it is with a heavy metal musician. It boasts an impressive amount of amp models and effects, meaning that it is possible to perform without the need to carry many pedals with you. We see many of these acronyms used in the specifications of musical equipment and quite often they’re a combination of technology and marketing hype.

No prizes for guessing that this is a simulation of the legendary Roland Jazz Chorus amp. Ultra clean and fat. Adding a helping of chorus and reverb really brings this to life. Nice. With a fresh set of batteries or rechargeable batteries, mobile use without a power outlet is possible for about 20-25 hours. The Micro Cube is worn on a mini-guitar strap, which clamps to strap pins on the side. With two specially made power amps and four speakers, the RX amp produces an immersive, stereo sound that must be heard to be believed. The true stereo engine also allows bass tones that defy the size of the cabinet. Battery Drive Firstly, they’re designed to sound good at really low volumes – which makes them perfect for bedroom axe wielders practicing late at night; and (2) they’re usually battery powered and portable so you can take them anywhere – the beach; a friend’s house; the park. Have amp, will travel.

Added to this is the Extreme model with ultra distortion so that together with the classic British and American amp models as well as a Roland Jazz Chorus model, all musical genres from jazz to metal are covered. The effects are distributed over two pots (Modulation FX + Rev/Dly), offering all the usual, including a new Octaver and Spring Reverb. Of course, some guitarists will definitely prefer a more simplistic approach, but for others needing a broader sonic palette, amp modeling is the way to go. Another benefit is the ability to record awesome guitar sounds direct without the hassle of mic’ing up a guitar cab at ear shattering volumes. It may seem a bit flimsy and non-durable. As the cheapest option here, consider it as the budget practice amp of preference. It is also battery-powered, like the Micro Cube. Mini guitar amps are modern marvels. Get over the fact that they’re not going to sound like a Mesa Boogie at full tilt and you’ll be able to truly appreciate just how awesome they are. The pros far outweigh the cons – but just what is target audience? On each effect setting, there is the option to increase (or decrease) the volume of the effect from subtle to full-on.

It’s Hip to be Square

The 25w version is loud enough for the average busk, whereas the 40w version will give you lots of headroom with the benefit of a larger speaker.

Three watts + clean + loud are physically mutually exclusive. So even with the Micro Cube GX at the end of the loudness scale, a crystal clear, clean sound is not really possible. At a higher volume, the sound is always minimally gritty and dirty due to the limiting gain, but this interference component is so quiet in relation to the useful signal that it is almost negligible for the joy of playing.

It’s Hip to be Square

Essentially, COSM is the technology behind Roland’s modeling amplifiers – like the Micro GX. The ability for a guitarist to call up a classic amp, along with a matched mic’d speaker cab takes things to another level. Adding to the GX series’s new features like the i-CUBE Link, all this opens up many new opportunities to practice and record, providing an audio interface for working with music apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Your setting will be saved. After that you can toggle between the saved sound and the current settings effectively creating a dual channel amp. You could save a lead guitar sound in the memory and use the ‘live’ sound for rhythm and then switch between the two. The sounds: but first, what in God’s name is COSM? COSM models are available, including an acoustic simulator and a neutral setting for use with a microphone instead of a guitar.

You can build your own sound using 30 amps and 40 effects, with access to over 10,000 presets and Positive Grid’s ever-growing Tone Cloud. It is ideal if you are just starting out and want to improve your technique or define your style. Do not be deterred by the seemingly tiny 5w power rating; this amp will handle a moderately populated street. However, despite having more projection and better sound quality than the smaller Roland Micro Cube, at a higher volume this amp loses a lot of its clarity, becoming tonally muddy. The top panel of the Roland Micro Cube GX is definitely one of its strong points. Its simplistic layout means all controls are at your fingertips and it’s very intuitive. Let’s go through the controls in detail from left to right: i-Cube LinkThis doesn’t enable you to save banks of your own sounds but it does allow you to save one! Noodle around and experiment with the Micro Cube GX’s rich palette of sounds and when you find something you like, hit the Memory button for a few seconds. They come in a range of sizes to suit the intended use. The smallest 15w version weighs a mere 5kg. The largest of the range, the 500w, still only weighs 17kg. You might think this extremely low weight would reduce the bass response, but you will be pleasantly surprised, as they sound just as good as an amp 3x the weight. The MICRO CUBE GX features the same ultra-compact footprint, battery-powered operation, and big tone that made the original MICRO CUBE such a massive hit around the globe. With up to 25 hours of playing time using six NiMH AA-size batteries, you can enjoy uninterrupted fun while jamming at home, at the beach, on camping trips, at parties—wherever! Increased power output delivers even better performance than before, and a chromatic tuner is built in, eliminating the need to carry an external tuner when you play. World-Class Amps and Effects Features: Variable – the 50w basically comes with nothing, the 500w has XLR output, effects loop, horn defeat, additional 8 ohm speaker output, overdrive circuit and 2 – 10″ speakers. Features change with the size of the amp you choose. And thanks to the focus as a practice amp or small gig amp, there is no need for a stadium-ready volume for good sound. On the contrary:the THR handle compression at low volume really well.
