What I should have done, is wipe off the excess and then use clear wax to remove the liming wax from the flats and from the areas that didn’t need to be highlighted. It’s not a huge difference but over those few days the liming wax had bleached away most of the interest in the piece. The kitchen cabinets were in pretty good shape. They were generally free of dings, but some did have a few scratches. The bigger issue was that they were dull and dirty, and the finish had been worn down or even off in some places (like where they were grabbed to be pulled open). I also wasn’t in love with the orangey tone of them. So, enter Briwax. I love using Briwax to stain and finish wood, especially pine. It leaves a beautiful touchable luster that enhances the natural character of the wood. It provides a lot of control over adding and removing color and is very forgiving of mistakes. Briwax comes in a dozen or more different colors and it is easy to layer colors and create depth and dimension that would be difficult to achieve with other stains. Liming wax can give pine furniture a wonderful antique finish that adds virtual years, interest and character to a piece of furniture. The look of imperfect white caught in the grain, creases, nooks and crannies of a piece is a distinct finish that really sets it apart from simpler, less dynamic finishes. Basically if you are looking at a super old piece of furniture that has white highlights and you are wondering if you should take out a second mortgage to buy this French antique piece or try to recreate it yourself, the answer is liming wax, that and no do not take out a second mortgage to buy French antiques. The Briwax finish can be maintained by further applications which will give increased hardness and shine. So the very first thing you need to know for the project is what the base color you are looking for. I was going for an aged pine look with the liming wax adding even further age to the overall appearance. Starting off with raw pine, it looked anything but aged.

Maintenance: The renowned Briwax finish can be maintained by further applications, giving increased hardness and shine. This is a traditional finishing treatment for all types of wood in the home and in the workshop. Briwax is a blend of Beeswax and Carnauba waxes and gives an instant natural sheen to bare wood. It is ideal for use on wood carvings and turned wood, skirting boards and doors, and is widely used in the pine furniture industry. Briwax Original is formulated with fast drying, stronger solvents which speed up drying and also increase the cleaning ability of the wax slightly. This means that it will renovate older dirtier furniture and leave you with the deep grain enriching Briwax shine. Unsealed wooden surfaces should be smooth, dry and clean. In temperatures of above 20°C Briwax Original Wax may soften or liquify. If this happens, replace the lid and store in a cool place, it will then return to its original form.

Some people use whitewash and liming wax interchangeably but to me there is a pretty big difference. A whitewash finish in furniture is achieved by watering down a white paint and results in a more milky wash finish, it’s much more white overall versus the liming wax finish should highlight the natural color or stain of a piece and leave only the wax in the crevices or grain. How do you apply liming wax? Use clear wax when removing excess liming wax so that I don’t rub a bleaching agent in across the entire piece.
