Its support for both CFexpress Type A and SD media cards, along with its stylish and durable design, make it an excellent choice for photographers and videographers who need a reliable card reader for their workflow. The card that takes the most shots before the buffer kicks in while shooting in mechanical shutter is the Delkin – but by just a smidge. There's also the lack of CFExpress support currently, although, the modular design means it would be easy to add this functionality at a later date. One notable difference between the ProGrade reader and the Sony reader is the design of the card slots.

CFexpress Type B / XQD Memory Card Reader | MRW-G1 | Sony

The ProGrade reader features two distinct card slots, one for CFexpress Type A cards and one for UHS-II SDXC cards. Its top-of-the-range Cobalt range of CFexpress Type B cards set new standards for CFexpress performance. Smooth and eIt is built to an exceptional standard and feels “pro” in every way, making it an ideal choice for professional photographers and videographers who require fast and efficient storage solutions. equates to 1250 Megabytes per second - some way short of the 1700MB/s claimed maximum read speed of the SanDisk Extreme Pro CFexpress card. Two capacities are offered - 325GB and 650GB - and both are 'reassuringly' expensive for their size, but when has top performance ever been cheap?

It was so consistent among the cards, it’s not worth reporting other than to say that we’d see a roughly 2 degree Celsius increase per run, and simply plugging 5 numbers into a computer between runs and formatting the card would provide enough time for the camera’s card slot to lose 1 degree. The chart here shows a comparison of the drive performance (orange) versus the number of frames that can be blasted through the card in 30 seconds on an R5. As any Z 6 or Z 7 owner will know, XQD cards are far from cheap, mainly because Sony has a stranglehold on the market. Combine that with different cords providing different bandwidth, and some computers having different levels of USB support on different ports, this is rife for confusion and points out that people can compare their own bandwidth results to ours to see if perhaps they could get significantly better download rates by tinkering with those factors. Designed to connect with the latest laptops and devices, the CFexpress® Card Reader is ready for the newest USB-C™ technology.CFexpress cards, like their predecessors the XQD cards, act essentially as SSD drives when put into a card reader. It’s a long, arduous, quiet day until all of a sudden I need to lay down as many frames as possible without the camera stuttering. The cache will appear to be about 60 shots deep because fast cards will allow you to fill up about half again as much data during the time it is uploading to the memory card. We will soon have a review available comparing this reader to the Delkin Devices card reader and the Angelbird card reader, both of which use USB 3. Even more interesting, that drive performance is only about half as fast as the claimed maximum performance.

PetaPixel got its hands on this very new hardware and the initial tests are proving extremely impressive. Gen2 speeds 3 the SanDisk Extreme PRO® CFexpress® Card Reader optimizes the performance of the CFexpress® Card Type B 2 for smooth, efficient workflow from location to post production. The reader also comes with both USB Type-C to Type-C and USB Type-C to Type-A cables, which ensures maximum compatibility with your devices. Various capacities are available, from 80GB, right up to a class-leading 1920GB, though all are relatively expensive for the storage you get. SanDisk's Extreme PRO memory cards are often class-leading, but in the CFexpress sector SanDisk is up against some intense - and faster - competition. We clocked this reader/card combo at a maximum 1039MB/s using the CrystalDiskMark speed benchmark software, verifying Lexar's 1050MB/s claim. He's also the team's man-at-arms when it comes to camera bags, filters, memory cards, and all manner of camera accessories –his lab is a bit like the Batcave of photography!

Tested: New CFexpress 4.0 Readers Make Your Current Cards Way

The Transcend RDE2 CFexpress Type B Card Reader is a high-performance card reader designed for professional use, such as photographic and cinematic applications. The problems noted above can be solved with the use of either the Delkin or the Angelbird card readers, which each work fine with all 10 cards tested. These results retested, standardized on a Sonnet dual CFexpress card reader using a Thunderbolt 3 port and cord. There is some correlation between drive performance and actual performance in terms of throughput when used in a camera. The spring-loaded memory card slot has a pleasing action too, with a gentle push of the memory card ejecting it from the reader. In mechanical shutter at 12 FPS, the R5 will give you between 10 and 15 seconds of glorious, uninterrupted shooting.
