There’s a choice of four volume modes: 75dB Toddler Mode, 85dB Kid Mode, 94dB Travel Mode and StudyMode. A BuddyCable system allows children to listen together, and there’s a built-in mic for family chat or homeschooling. Available in pink, blue or green, the BuddyPhones Play are Bluetooth wireless on-ears for the youngest of rockers. Other sleep headphones can certainly be used as normal headphones, but bear in mind that the genre has primarily been designed to be comfortable when worn while lying down. They have a volume limiter, snazzy design and somehow manage to feature noise-cancelling ear cushions!

The World Health Organization’ recommends an 85dB-limited volume range for young listeners, advice echoed by both the Hearing Health foundation and the US OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administrator). Incidentally, if you’re a data fan, it’s worth knowing these headphones also track your sleep and show you how well you’ve slept each night.

They can be slightly uncomfortable if you sleep on your side, though, as they’re larger in profile than others and stand slightly proud in the ear. We’re all aware of the Philips name when it comes to electronics, so it’s great to see the Dutch firm tuning their attention to the children’s headphones market with the neat SHK2000. If you’ve never had your ear impressions taken, it’s a largely inoffensive, entirely pain-free experience. Battery Life isn't quite as good as BuddyPhones' competitors though, and comes in at 14 hours fully charged.

If your child does any form of video homeschooling, spends time FaceTiming friends or relatives or is an avid gamer, you’ll want headphones with a built-in microphone too. This relatively affordable headband is a great option if the idea of wearing earbuds at night doesn’t appeal. What's more, all of these headphones look cool as a cucumber – and, let's face it, that's what the kids really want.These are the sole preserve of sleep headphones, because they fit on your head like a sweatband, many doubling up as eye masks, too. Battery life is rated at 18 hours, which while good enough for a few days use, isn’t quite as exhaustive as their rivals. Any custom mould earphone takes a while to get used to, but we found the Snugs remarkably easy to fit, and comfortable for hours at a time.
