A skim coat is a very popular way to smooth out the surface of a plastered wall. In essence, it is adding another, thin layer of plaster on top of the already existing plaster. This is ideal for walls that have a few dents or scrapes, as it effectively gives you a new blank canvas to work from. The dust particles can easily spread throughout your entire home, so we recommend closing the door to the room you are working in. Clay plaster uses natural clay as the primary binding element before being combined with aggregates and natural fibres.

Air bubbles in the mold show up as bumps in the casting. This could have been reduced by mixing the molding compound carefully to avoid introducing more air, pulling a vacuum on the compound to bring bubbles to the surface (it will foam, so make sure you're prepared for a mess), and having the model move around so the compound adheres to the object, causing any bubbles to form away from the model, rather than next to it. I removed the larger of these from the casting simply by pinching them with a set of pliers. A file, sandpaper, or rotary tool with a burr would work as well though you lose detail the more material you remove. This is by far the most common issue, and one of the easiest to fix. Still, make sure they wriggle their fingers and move their hand around a lot before holding the pose during molding. If the finish is slightly less than perfect, we recommend using medium-grit sandpaper to even out the surface a bit. This should be around 120 grit or higher. Sandpaper with a lower grit rating is more likely to scratch the plaster on the walls and leave marks. What is a mist coat? Next up, you’ll need to prime the walls to make it easier for the plaster to adhere to them. The ability to use the hand after a hand fracture depends on the bone broken and the fracture pattern. A significant number of hand fractures allow the patient to use the hand as pain allows but this would usually only be for very light activity initially. As time progresses the hand can gradually be used for an increasing number of activities with less pain. Prepare the casting for mounting by sanding the mounting surface of the casting flat, and ideally parallel to the fastener. Scratch name and date of the casting into this surface where it will be hidden from view but accessible if needed later to resolve inevitable fights over who's hand it really is later. In the absence of explicit documentation about the process of casting Clasped Hands, instructions published in the nineteenth century and examples of life casts by Hosmer’s peers record the process that she must have undertaken. Contrary to claims of contingency in accounts of indexical portraiture, the complexity of the historical life casting process—from making a mold of living bodies to producing a plaster cast from that mold—speaks to both material and artistic agency in determining the resulting sculpture. Historical sources reveal how human hands and artistic materials came together in tension, constraining, resisting, and threatening one another. Indicative of broader assumptions about body casts, Nicholas Penny has suggested that the “documentary value” of Clasped Hands would have been “diminished by the assertion of artistic mediation”. 23 In contrast, these understudied texts suggest a historical conception of life casting distinct from later interpretations, one which recognized an artist’s skill and choices without diminishing the significance of the resulting sculpture. How do I mix the plaster?

This is a much less messy way to sand down your plaster walls. It is useful when you need a delicate touch as wet sanding is much more gentle and less abrasive than dry sanding. This can only be done on fresh plaster that has not been fully set. Before applying your mist coat, it is a good idea to wipe down the plaster on your walls. Use a damp cloth to do this. This will help to remove any fine dust particles from the surface of the walls which could negatively affect the mist coat and any subsequent coats of paint.
