Moving on to the 55D8000’s 3D features, the most notable addition is auto-detection of incoming side-by-side 3D formats of the sort delivered by Sky’s 3D channel, saving you the bother of manually activating side-by-side mode in the TV’s menus. You can also adjust the image’s depth and focus via a 3D ‘optimisation’ slider. The component vidoe connection provides the highest picture quality of all the analogue connectors by splitting the picture signal into 3 components: brightness, colour and contrast. This results in reduced interference and improved picture quality. There’s a lot to like about the HD performance delivered by the Samsung UE55D8000. After calibration, we were very happy with the believability of the on-screen images. Thanks to the extensive Greyscale and Colour setup options available on the set, the image was free of unwanted colour tints (we especially appreciated being able to see dark scenes without the trademark “LCD blue glowing” contaminating shadowed areas). And, thanks to the SPVA panel’s excellent contrast performance, as well as the ruler-flat Gamma we achieved during calibration, pictures had a decent sense of realism – although the edges of the panel were brighter than the centre point which we measured (see the “Viewing Angle” section). With so much to talk about regarding the 55D8000’s Smart Hub and, in a moment, 3D capabilities, we won’t go into as much detail as we normally might on the sort of picture fine-tuning adjustments the set carries. What we must say, though, is that despite the set not having ISF or THX endorsement, it’s certainly not short of tweaks and adjustments. Including such appreciated calibration aids as a 10-point white balance, a variety of gamma tools, and a colour management system. Samsung UE55TU8000 review What Hi-Fi? Awards 2020 winner. Samsung tops the mid-range for yet another year Samsung UE55TU8000 is a very good TV. The picture quality is amazing thanks to the HDR technology. The colors also look very good thanks to the dynamic crystal color and color enhancer technologies. The Samsung UE55TU8000 has some very useful features, including internet connection, USB HID and screen sharing technologies, Bixby and Google assistant, and Alexa compatibility. The sound is loud and clear, but it also depends on the quality of the content. The design is very good and the price is not bad either. This isn’t a demanding screen to set up. We like the fact that Samsung doesn’t over complicate its image menus. In addition to Movie mode, there’s a simple choice between Standard, Natural and Dynamic. The latter looks a little over bright and oversaturated, but Natural is a good catch-all. It’s a little more colour rich and contrasty than Standard, on this particular set at least. We test every TV we review thoroughly over an extended period of time. We use industry standard tests to compare features properly. We’ll always tell you what we find. We never, ever, accept money to review a product.Naturally, there’s not much in the way of a broad soundstage. There’s very little movement of the audio as we watch the “massive space battle” at the beginning of chapter 3 but, again, it’s important to have realistic expectations at this budget. Save change for a cheap soundbar and you’ll have yourself an excellent budget home cinema combo. Verdict created by Samsung: a data-sheet is imported from an official source from a manufacturer. But the data-sheet is not yet standardized by an Icecat editor. This has a massively positive impact on the 3D experience, allowing you to watch 3D for longer without feeling tired, and finally making it possible to see without distraction just how detailed and crisp Samsung’s 3D engine can make full HD 3D material (from Blu-ray) look. Furthermore, the huge reduction in crosstalk also makes the 55D8000’s images seem to have a greater depth, without your eyes having to work overtime to resolve everything.

With [Game Mode] engaged, we measured the UE55D8000 as lagging by about 33ms. This is one of the better figures we’ve measured from a Samsung LCD-based television, and will probably prove to be workable for the majority of users. We’re personally used to faster displays, meaning that, although we could still win online games of Halo: Reach, the residual input lag on the D8000 did make us feel slightly more like spectators, rather than participants, in the game world. Smart HubThere’s no doubt that the picture comes with some limitations at its price, but overall the TU8000 impresses with its natural colour handling, crisp, detailed picture, solid motion processing and good upscaling. It needs some settings tweaked to perform to the very best of its abilities, though. Familiar from other Samsungs, we’re offered two Game mode options. If you opt to select Game Motion Plus, you’ll retain some elements of beneficial picture processing. In this mode, input lag measures around 26.7ms (which is fine for casual gaming). However if you disable Game Motion Plus, and go hardcore Game mode, input lag drops to a mere 11.7ms (measured at 1080p/60fps), which can be considered excellent.

As is so often the case, the audio performance in the TU8000 isn’t much to get excited about, but also isn’t the worst we’ve heard. Overall it’s just on the flat side, with little by way of dynamics and organisation, but offering a decent amount of weight that stops it from sounding too thin. There’s no Dolby Vision HDR support, as is normal with Samsung right up to its top-range models, including the world-beating Samsung Q950TS, and we can’t help feel but feel the TU8500 could really benefit from a little dynamic tone mapping guidance when watching some of the more eye-popping HDR shows on Netflix. This might have helped retain some sense of sparkle. The other two palpable hits about the 55D8000’s 3D performance are the richness of colours and the striking brightness level that remain even after you’ve donned Samsung’s active shutter glasses – glasses which, incidentally, have shifted to Bluetooth syncing with the TV rather than the old infra-red system. The Samsung TU8000 TV will recognise whenever you’re playing compatible HDR content, and switch to an HDR mode automatically, so any settings you change at this point will remain in place for HDR content only. Stretched out onto this 55in panel, it’s obviously far from an AV treat but the picture is solid, the colours are realistic and there’s even some detail and texture to the guests’ woollen jumpers and the charismatic host’s pin-striped suit. Uses an anologue connetion which carries picture signals that have been split into colour and brightness. For an improved picture you may want to consider upgraging to HDMI connector which carries digital picture and sound signals.
