Gran Turismo, then, showed natural progression and a desire to evolve. Persson channelled her alienation into aching, trembling vocals. Her voice, both volatile and velveteen, soars and sighs on the downbeat groove of Explode, while the chunky guitars and fragmented beats of Higher enable her tight rasp to truly shine. Junk of the Hearts and Marvel Hill also display the band’s mercurial talents, bringing together textural fretwork, thumping bass and programmed beats. She remains a fabulous frontperson and if she’s disappointed by the closed balcony and the hall’s empty spaces, it doesn’t show. “Look at you, Manchester!” she yells. With guitarist Oskar Humlebo ably replacing Peter Svensson (who declined the reunion) and the sound ever improving, the country-tinged Junk of the Hearts doesn’t sound out of place in today’s world of Taylor Swift et al.

Even though the drums were recorded using analogue tape compression, the rest of the song's production, including the "fat fuzzy bass line" and the coda, was completed using Pro Tools 24. In Sweden, it debuted at number twenty-one on the Swedish Top 100 Singles Chart and peaked at number three in November 1998. It spent at total of eighteen weeks in the chart. [11] In the United Kingdom, it debuted and peaked at number 14 on the UK Singles Chart.

Angular guitars edge their way in cunningly, too, providing some of the album's finest moments - notably 'My Favourite Game' and 'Do You Believe', which is possibly a cynical response to 'Lovefool': "Do you really think that love is going to save the world?/Well I don't think so". Still, it's all too rare when real emotion, rather than canned sentiment, is allowed a look-in. Hence the tinny drums and saccharine vocals of 'Marvel Hill' and the faux-gospel Celine Dion schmaltz of 'Higher'. Track List

Myopic record companies who can't see the value of long‑term artist development should stop to consider the career of The Cardigans. Now on their fourth album, the band are currently Sweden's biggest music‑industry export earner, and have proved beyond doubt that the only way for a record company to transform a local act into an international one is to give it time to evolve and develop. The Cardigans' current status also, however, owes a great deal to another long‑term relationship — with producer Tore Johansson, who has produced all of the band's records since discovering them five years ago. Trendell, Andrew (19 June 2018). "The Cardigans announce 20th anniversary UK tour for 'Gran Turismo' ". NME . Retrieved 5 December 2018. Our delicious waiting is made even more appetizing by the Cardigans "new" release, Gran Turismo. The sounds I hear disturb me, though. Where the Cardigans seemed so on top of their game on Last Band, Gran Turismo gives me a Nina that seems to have grown morose from her waiting. The light, sharply- arranged and smilingly ironic attitude that saturated their previous effort has metamorphosed into a self- concerned dragging effort devoid of the featherweight happiness that the Cardigans have been notable for. Simpson, Dave (4 December 2018). "The Cardigans review – at their best when playing the lovefool". The Guardian . Retrieved 5 December 2018. The super‑distorted bass guitar, which is so fuzzy it almost sounds like a synth, was achieved by playing the bass straight into a Korg fuzzbox and then applying EQ. The other obvious instrumental contribution is the Hammond organ, played through a Leslie speaker with no treble rotor and mixed to sweep around the stereo spectrum.

During the band's first break Nina Persson released an album as A Camp, and Peter Svensson and Bengt Lagerberg worked on the project Paus with help from Joakim Berg from Kent, and Magnus Sveningsson recorded as Righteous Boy. Both the drum and guitar parts were recorded in a "'70s-style dry room" [3] while the vocals were recorded in the attic of the studio. [5]

Versions

In June 2018, the band announced their only live shows of the year: a four-date UK tour in December to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gran Turismo in which they would perform the album in full again. [14] In an interview to promote the tour, Persson stated, "There won’t be any more Cardigans records, I’m pretty sure. But we’ll keep doing little tours and shows as long as it’s fun, as long as we can do it well and feel that it’s something that’s current to us."
