Description

The latest design of this guardian cage sanctuary has a wider base, to put more distance between your food and large birds like pigeons and doves. This makes this sanctuary even more effective at creating a safe area for small birds to feed in and excluding large birds from your RSPB ground table (sold separately).

Only add enough food for one day. Food left to sit overnight or for longer can go mouldy or attract rodents. Keeping birds healthy and safe is so important. We wanted to create a high-quality cage that can provide both nutrition and safety, which is why we used powder-coated steel so you can rely on this sturdy cage. Like pigeons and collared doves, the game birds are granivorous and will eat mainly grains and seeds. Water Birds

A surprising number of our most popular garden birds prefer to feed on the ground. The Thrush Family Given the huge range of ground-feeding birds that might visit our gardens, the range of ground feeders on offer is surprisingly small.

Magpies are quite big birds and extremely clever and adaptable. They’re entertaining to watch but if you’re having trouble with them eating all your bird food or damaging bird feeders you can buy solutions from RSPB Shop. Feeders and accessories to deter magpies:Grey squirrels can be a real problem when feeding your garden birds. They can damage your feeders by chewing through plastic rapidly, rendering them useless. The pitched roof allows for a coconut shell treat or small feeder (neither included) to be hung above a ground feeding table (such as the RSPB Ground-feeding table, not included). Like pigeons, they are ground feeders and not built to eat clinging to tree trunks or hanging bird feeders. Designed to provide a wide, stable feeding surface, all our ground bird feeder products feature built-in drainage to prevent your bird food getting waterlogged. We also have ground feeder cage designs to help protect and preserve the food you put out for your feathered garden visitors.

The best thing this wooden table along with my narrow metal cage stops the pigeons from getting the bird food. Also, the granivorous birds, which typically feed on grains and seeds, naturally prefer to feed on the ground. Pheasants, grouse and quail used to be frequent visitors to our garden when we lived in open countryside. They are colourful birds with real personality, and although they do eat lots, we loved seeing them strutting around the garden. But if keeping predators and larger birds at bay is an issue, then a cage ground feeder could be an option. However, the most important factor to consider is bird safety. Is the feeder safe for birds to use? With no points where birds’ feet could get trapped? What bird food do you need for your bird feeder? And, if you have squirrels or cats in your garden, what is the best feeder to keep your bird food and birds safe? All RSPB bird feeders are designed with bird safety in mind. Read on to learn more about the different options available. Seed feeders

Predators

But we’ve seen in this article that there are a whole host of garden favourites who won’t get any use out of a hanging feeder. And quite a few who won’t even be able to use your bird table. It can be frustrating when squirrels steal all of your bird food, but what’s more upsetting is when larger birds and cats chase birds away from their meal. Our strong powder-coated steel ground feeder cage protects smaller birds and their food from potential danger or greedy squirrels! And if, like us, you want to place your ground feeder under your hanging feeders to catch the spillage, these cage models are pretty useless.
