Over the year Roger doesn’t change that much, his lowest tension will be around 26 kgs and his high will be around 27 kgs. Generally, he doesn’t vary much more than a kilogram throughout the season. He will, however, have racquets strung at different amounts for matches. For a three-set match we’ll string him eight racquets and he’s doing four at one tension, four at another. Typically four at 26.5 and four at 27. But he doesn’t vary too much at all from 26 to 27 all throughout the year. Ron Yu, Priority 1 If we look at some of the individual specs like weight, stiffness and string pattern, you can see why it’s so well suited to the Swiss maestro. The heavier your racquet, the more power potential you have. It’s like hitting a nail with a hammer. Would you be able to hit a nail into a piece of wood faster with a toy hammer the size of your pinky or with a hammer the width of your arm?

Players generally use string savers to reduce wear and tear on their strings. However, Federer likely uses them more out of tradition because he’s always used them. Yu prepares eight racquets for Federer before every match, so preserving his strings isn’t a concern. Does Federer Use Power Pads? They are then matched and customised by Priority 1 with the grip mould Federer likes. So while they are near identical, there are a couple of little tweaks. Federer uses a slightly modified eastern grip, it lies somewhere between the traditional eastern forehand grip and the standard semi-western grip. This grip means Federer can hit through the ball and take the ball on the up; allowing him to step inside the court and dictate play against his opponents.

There has been some discussion around what grip size Roger Federer uses but it is generally accepted that he uses a 4 and 3/8 grip size with an overgrip on his RF97. I don’t use a dampener, as I want the feel of the ball strike within the stringbed to be as pure as possible. Previously he used the Wilson Pro Staff 90, a similar frame but with a 90 square inch head size which by modern standards on the ATP Tour is extremely small. The price of Federer’s racquet is more than you’ll pay for intro models, but it’s still relatively affordable. Pro Staff RF97 Autograph Price

That combination of shots get him on the front foot early meaning he can deploy the full mass of the racquet as he’s stepping forward with his body going through the ball. Federer is no different; he rotates his upper body as fully as he possibly can. This creates almost like a coiled spring effect that unwinds and releases all the stored energy upon impact with the ball. The natural gut offers power, comfort, and supreme feeling, while the other string choice delivers heavy spin, control, and stability. The fact that Roger has used only these strings for most of his long career is not simply loyalty to the brand or him getting too comfortable but the best way to ensure consistency in the games. The Laver Cup is an indoor event, so is he always using this tension across the year? The answer is no, but Federer doesn’t alter his tension that much throughout the season. Offering unrivalled precision through perfect feel and giving you the control you need to rule the court, find out why these are a perfect match for intermediate and professional players with some serious weight behind them.

Roger Federer's first racquet as a professional

Federer’s forehand maybe beautiful but it’s not easy to understand, such a shot doesn’t just ‘happen’ and is actually generated from a series of events/movements of which I’ll dissect the major elements below: 1.) Federer uses an Eastern Forehand Grip This gives Federer access to spin when he needs it but plenty of control (although not as much as on the 90 square inch racquet) to aid with direction when he’s trying to hit flatter and find the lines. Couple that with his hybrid string setup with gut and poly, you have a great blend of power and control. When you choose to take the ball early against opponents who hit with such pace and spin, a heavy racquet prevents it from twisting in the hand and stops a player from being pushed around. The Federer forehand is a shot that has defined tennis for the last decade. Not only is it a beautiful shot it’s also deadly and when it’s “on” his forehand can take the match away from even the most seasoned opponents. Should you try and copy the Federer Forehand?

Roger Federer’s tennis racquet is nothing magical, but his game style and results easily make you think it is. Federer uses his own Wilson Pro Staff RF 97 Autograph racquet that you can buy in the store. He uses Champions Choice strings. If you’re interested in what racquets other ATP pros actually use… read this post about pro player racquets. Yu even tries to keep the time between when the racquets come off the machine to when the player is scheduled to play consistently throughout the tournament. In fact, when Federer beat Pete Sampras at the 2001 Wimbledon, both players were using the same model racquet. Federer’s racquet was made in China but Sampras’ racquet was made in St.Vincent, a Caribbean island in the Grenadines. Hyper Pro Staff 6.1 (2001-2002) Federer changed to the Wilson K Factor Six One Tour in 2008 until 2010 when he made a minor change to the Wilson Six One Tour BLX and then the Wilson BLX Pro Staff Six One 90 in 2012. These racquets were almost identical except for a few minor updates. What are your thoughts about the Wilson Pro Staff 97 Roger Federer Autograph? Does it entice you? Please comment below!

This blue racquet is the same racquet Federer used in the previous edition of the Laver Cup, except for the blue paint job. Pro Staff 97 Autograph v13 (2020) In reality, it’s very similar to a lot of other ‘players’ frames out there that have high static weights, significant headlight biases and thin beams like the Yonex VCORE Pro 97.The Roger Federer forehand– a thing of beauty, the most natural looking shot in the game of tennis but also one of the most devastating and versatile shots to ever grace the sport.
