While we handed the previous version of the 20 a less-than-generous three stars – its good looks and clear sound were let down by limited file compatibility and overstated bass – the product has come a long way since.

On a more critical note, while the volume control seemingly gives you lots of headroom, it's essentially unusable after 70 percent. SoundTouch lets you take total control of your listening experience, right from your smartphone or tablet. At the same time, of course, Sonos won't be standing still -- it too is working to improve its already excellent system and will no doubt release new speaker options. However, Apple device owners can use Apple AirPlay 2 to group the SoundTouch 20 speaker – Series III with Bose Home Speaker family products for multi-room synchronized playback.
