Ease of Use: I examined how easy the manual controls were to use and whether they had a touchscreen or remote control to make them less hassle to use. Each product got a higher rating if the remote had a clever magnet to attach it to the fan or a built-in storage spot. However, if the remote operated at the same frequency as the smart TV remote, it rated lower since that can be frustrating. I also examined their power cords; those with short cords (below 2 m) got a lower rating because some people may need an extension cord. Finally, if assembly was fast and easy it got a higher rating.

The Vornado AVH10 Vortex Heater stands out for being able to heat or cool small to medium-sized rooms efficiently while also being compact and portable. It weighs less than 5 pounds and is small enough to fit on a nightstand or desk, and it won’t take up much of a footprint on the floor. While it’s not as tall and slim as a tower model (like our best overall), the Vornado has the brand’s signature technology, so it’s designed to circulate the air around the entire room, while the unit remains perfectly still (it does not oscillate), and remains relatively quiet. There are a couple of negatives to note. The first is that the power cable is a little short at 1.4 m. Some users may require an extension cord. The fan itself is also made from lightweight plastic. While this aids portability, it’s not the most robust on the market. If you’re particularly keen to create a perfect working, relaxing or sleeping environment, you may want to look for a bladeless fan with more adjustability when it comes to settings. Speed Settings

There’s a remote control included, but the fan’s settings can also be adjusted by the touch-sensitive buttons on the unit itself. As well as a fan function, this model can be used to fill your home with your favourite aromas. There’s a built-in essential oil tray. Simply add a few drops and your home will soon be filled with your favourite scent.

We’ve tested dozens of fans and space heaters at The Lab and in our own homes, as well as researched additional combination fan heaters that fit our requirements. All options were evaluated on performance, design, safety features, noise levels, portability, and value. Choose a larger, free-standing tower fan to cool larger rooms. A fan that can move air at a rate of 100 m ³/minute is suitable for standard living rooms/bedrooms (of approximately 20 m²). Tower fans use up floor space, so they aren’t the best option for smaller houses, but they are still reasonably compact. Firstly, from a design perspective it looks very sleek and modern. I went with the traditional white and grey, as it fits in with my bedroom decor, but it actually has 8 different colour combinations to choose from for those with more adventurous tastes! Opt for the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde and you get air purifying too, but at a cost; for the price, the Princess Smart Heating and Cooling Tower delivers excellent performance all year-around.

Vortex Air™ Pro - Bladeless Tower Fan (Heater & Cooler)

How powerful the bladeless fan is will depend on its motor and how efficiently it carries out the previous steps. The PureMate Bladeless Tower Fan is a bladeless fan with a twist. Not only will it keep your home cool during a heatwave, it also has a built-in essential oil tray. This tray can be filled with an oil of your choice to fill your home with your favourite aroma!

If you want a bladeless fan for personal use, or to use in your home office, choose a small, compact desk fan. A fan of 60 cm or less is the best height to sit on a desk, side table, or bedside table. Tower fans work by blowing air over your skin, making living, working and sleeping more comfortable when the thermometer rises. The EcoAir Kinetic's downsides are its size, which means it's not the best fit for a small home and can make storage a struggle if you're not blessed with a garage to stash it out of sight when it's not in use. It's also not the most portable fan in our round-up, weighing in at 5kg, the heaviest of all the fans we've tested. Our reviewer also wasn't entirely sold on its slightly dated appearance, although they were impressed by its build quality. Some bladeless fans go one step further than just having speed settings and offer a choice of modes to choose from too. You may come across fans with: What I also really appreciated about this model is the air purifier. My wife suffers from hayfever during the summer, and this feature really helps negate the issue at night. The filter is also really easy to replace, with the casing around the bottom of the fan coming away very easily.Note that fans don’t generate cool air (apart from this Princess model, which houses a water tank), so limit their usage to when you’re in the room and can feel the benefits. To get the most comfort from your fan, these GHI-approved tips will help boost its ability to circulate cooler air. How we test fans When there are fewer fan speeds to choose from, the lowest setting will likely be the least noisy. However, it might not be very powerful. The more speed settings there are, the slighter the gradient between each one. Therefore, you might be able to get slightly more fan power, whilst still keeping a volume that you can comfortably sleep and work with. Modes

There are a whole host of fan styles to choose between, from compact handheld fans that are great for taking out and about, to desk fans that allow you to place the fan on a convenient surface (if you have the space) so that the fan blows directly at you whilst your sitting and working, and tower and pedestal fans that can be placed on the floor and are great for the side of a bed or to cool a larger area. The type of fan that works best for your needs tends to depend on how and where you plan to use the fan, so thinking about placement before you shop can help to avoid costly mistakes. Power source As this is a portable model, you lose out on some features that bigger models have: you don’t get a remote, there are only four fan speeds and there’s no oscillation. If you need any of these options, look elsewhere, but if you want a flexible fan you can take everywhere this is the best model that we’ve reviewed. While it doesn’t come with a remote, we love all of the safety features, including a cool-touch exterior that keeps everyone—including children and pets—from touching a hot surface. We also think the hidden cord wrap on the bottom of the fan is a nice touch and that it comes with a five-year warranty. Although its DC motor means a more expensive initial outlay, as a result, the EcoAir Kinetic uses just 1-18 watts of energy to run, making this the most affordable fan we've tested in terms of running costs. As well as a range of modes, this fan comes with a remote control that allows you to adjust it from a distance. The beeps on the remote can be switched off when it’s in sleep mode, so you can adjust the settings at night without waking anyone up. There’s also a 12 hour timer which can be set in 1 hour increments, helping to keep your home cool without wasting energy. The light is located in the centre of the fan, surrounding the ‘hoop’ opening; it can be either white, green, purple or blue and creates an ambient glow without being too bright. The result is a contemporary-looking lamp, combined with a fan, that doesn’t look unlike the modern EVE robot in Wall-E… The design of this fan is another benefit. It’s sleek and convenient, just 31” tall and designed to fit into smaller spaces. The 70 ° oscillation means it can cool a wide area. With a lightweight build and carry handle at the top, it’s easy to move from room to room if needed.
